Grand Teton Chapel

The Chapel of the Transfiguration in Grand Teton national park is a challenge to photograph. Without the use of HDR, I'm not sure a usable image can be captured. The original image has no adjustments other than some sharpening in ACR. Behind the alter is what appears to be a white photograph, but, its actually a window scene showing a beautiful scene of the Grand Teton mountain range with an aspen grove. However, getting that scene properly exposed along with the inside of the chapel is a photographer's headache, unless, in my opinion, you use HDR.

In the HDR image, which is heavily cropped, the window scene is apparent. The chapel, in itself is fairly dark, so in the processed image, I've tried to keep it as it would appear when you first walk into the chapel. Its very dark with the window view properly exposed, as your eyes would see it.

Your thoughts are welcome.

Stand in the center of the aisle, so the window & cross are in the center of the view. Level the camera so the view is level in the pic. Set the camera to ISO 125, shutter 1/125, f16, ttl flash set to -1 ec & bounced to the ceiling or to the ceiling & wall behind the camera.

Good suggestion, assuming I had a flash at the time.

with the dark ceiling bouncing the flash would have little or no effect.
love the second shot. the view out the window looks like a painting. Nice work

Nice work, but I don't think the first photo was used to create the second photo. The top of the window frame is missing and the left side of the rail is missing. Good work, I just think you posted the wrong photo of the first one. If I'm mistaken I apologize.

I was in that chapel a couple of years ago while a pair of wedding photographers were working. I tried to do a HDR but it didn't come out right. I had ghosts etc. You did a great job. Congrats. I know how hard it is to make it work.
