Nikon D7500 question(s)

Hi Group,

My everyday camera is a D750 that I use for illustrating books, articles and product photography. My backup and grab-and-run camera is a D7000. I'm looking at a D7500 to replace it and have a question or two from those of you who are using it (I did check the search feature and didn't find answers).

1. Have any of you found a work-around for the lack of an AI indexing tab other than shoot full manual?

2. If full manual is the ONLY option, does the through-the-view-finder light meter work or do you have to use a hand held meter? It seems to me is should function but I'm just not sure what part the "tab" has to do with that process.

3. I'd like to pair the D7500 with a Tamron 150-600 G2 to add BIF shots to my inventory of photographs. Are any of you using this lens-camera combination (or similar) for BIF, etc.?

4. I'm thinking the 3 less mp will be more than offset by the higher ISO and Expeed 5 processor over a D7200 or ??? Your thoughts please?

Thanks in advance for your feedback. Take care & ...

Hi Group, br br My everyday camera is a D750 that... (show quote)

There is no work around for the D7500 when you use AI lenses. It would only function in manual and no meter. Nikon could make the camera meter without the AI tab but they decided not to do that on the D7500 or on the D3xxx and D5xxx. On the Df the camera meter works even if you move the AI tab out of the way thus defeat it. So it's purely Nikon decision to make the D7500 not to meter with AI lenses.

Go with the Nikon D7200, Al. It’s a superb camera. Don’t get too caught up with marketing specs.

No depth of field button, either. Apparently, though, you can check it through the viewing screen somehow. However, the difference in megapixels between the D7500 and D7200 is inconsequential, per Steve Perry. All in all, he prefers the 7500 over the 7200.

Because he is paid (in ongoing business relationship with Nikon) to "prefer" the "latest and greatest" (even when it's not).

I've always felt the D7500 was going to be the orphan model of the Nikon prosumer line. No second card slot, for forget using it on critical jobs. No battery grip (what?). 20 Mp, not 24 Mp.
No GPS, but there's always the heartbreak of Snapbridge.

Personally, I think you'd be better off with the D7200 even though there's no flip screen.

I have a D7500. The lack of the AI tab was not a problem for me as all my lenses are recent vintage.

When I use full manual, the built-in light meter works just fine. You can also use the control panel. The 180K pixel meter is superior to the one in the D7200. The metering system of the D7500 is the same as in the D500, which was one of the reasons I got the D7500.

I have a Nikkor DX 18-140 and the DX 3.5-5.6 18-300 lenses. With the D7500's features in 4 below, talking pictures of birds in flight has been a lot easier and more rewarding. I set up my D7500 for BBAF and have been shooting birds a lot.

You are correct, but in actual fact the offset is much more pronounced than you even imagine. The huge buffer of the D7500 is astounding, along with the 8FPS speed. I've been enjoying these features in my D7500; so smooth, so fast; just keeps on ticking.

Good questions. I hope I was of some usefulness.

I don't think that's the case with Steve.

To be clear, the money between Nikon and I only goes one way - from my pocket to their back account. I Never have received so much as an acknowledgement of my existence from them, much less money or free gear.

To the OP -

You're pretty much stuck with AI lenses. I do talk about some workarounds in this video (at 10.35), although they aren't pretty:

If you use AI lenses all the time, I'd get a D7200.

Exactly - everything I review, I buy with my own money. That's why I only do a limited number of reviews. If I can't use the gear, I don't buy it and review it.
