Does somebody, perhaps school system or camera store, offer classes?? You would benefit from systematic instruction.

I can't recommend Karl Taylor's education platform highly enough. It's an insanely low $14/mo (no obligation -- cancel anytime) for full access to a bunch of outstanding courses and tutorials. Karl is a well-known commercial photographer with a gift for teaching. He offers 15 chapters on light theory alone.

Check it out.

Hi all,

I am new in the photography world and I am experiencing some challenges and I was wondering if I can get some feedback from all of you who are pros in the subject. I have the Cannon 5D mark III and the cannon 50mm 1.2 but I am still getting used to use it. I have read the manual but certain things do not make sense yet. Here is one, I have the camera set to manual mode and I select the aperture and Sutter speed but if I move from place to the other where there is change in light I have to set the shutter speed again in order to get a correct exposed image. I was wondering if this is normal.
I am also having some focus issues. I know I have to focus on the eyes if I am shutting portraits but sometimes the pictures come up kind of blurry.
I also signed up for Lightroom to be able to edit the pictures taken and I've been watching some youtube videos to learn how to edit.

What do you all think I should do to get better? I will post some samples of what I've done so far. Any positive or negative feedback will be appreciated.

As a DSLR beginner myself, I would say, your images posted here seem to be very nice, others here my qualify to provide some positive insight and encouragement.

Avoid the advice to buy and use a tripod. The introduction of effective image stabilization has reduced the need for a tripod. IS allows handheld shooting at slower shutter speeds that once required a tripod.

As to consulting veteran photographers for guidance, keep a lookout for their biases shaped in the film era. Some might even urge you to learn film photography first, on the belief that doing so will make you a better photographer. Learning the principles, concepts, standards, rules, and techniques of photography you can do with a digital camera. Film photography has become passe.

Look for inspiration in the photographic work of others but do not copy them. In time, you will develop your own style to suit your taste and your eye.

Good luck.

I've got to disagree with that.

You are so right. Someone making a statement that there is no longer a need for a tripod in photography is ludicrous. Makes me think they have never picked up a camera.

People who NEVER use a tripod are missing out on a lot of different aspects of photography. Some things can be done without that can be done BETTER with a tripod. Other things can NOT be done without a tripod unless you like blurrrr...

I have no problem with using P mode. I personally prefer knowing that my aperture is set at f8...and I like f8. P works just as well...not the same but well. Seemed to me the guy was a beginner and that learning to watch the light and composition would benefit him. Actually, just going out and taking photos is a great teacher. And with a digital camera, film is cheap. Just my humble opinion.

Hi Shel. Am I to understand that you use F8 all of the time, even in low light situations?

It depends an awful lot of the kind of photography you do. For me (primarily landscape), a tripod is a necessity. For, e.g., street photography, I would imagine a tripod is a hindrance.

I think it's more accurate to say that Av, Tv, and P are all Auto Exposure modes (hence subject to Exposure Compensation, AE Lock, etc.). For that matter, M with Auto ISO is yet another AE mode. (Only M w/o Auto ISO and B are truly "manual" modes.) I've heard and read these called "semi" auto modes... I think that's misleading and confusing. There's nothing "semi" about them. They are all Auto Exposure (AE) modes, pure and simple.

The "green box/A+" is more of a "Super Auto" mode... "point-n-shoot" style, as you say. It not only utilizes "P" Auto Exposure, it goes much further by automating/dictating a number of other camera settings (such as focus setup, white balance, picture style, flash, even the type of file that will be saved and more).

But I do agree with your point that the green box/A+ probably not a good thing for anyone who is at all serious about their photography to use. I honestly don't recall ever using this mode on any Canon camera I've owned that had it.

How can Aperture Priority or Shutter priority be " They are all Auto Exposure (AE) modes, pure and simple", when only one is fixed the other is changeable? The photographer chooses one the camera chooses the other, how is that fully auto?
When I am shooting in a low light situation I set the aperture opening not the camera... The camera guesses what the shutter speed should be to compensate. This is a "priority" mode, not auto..... Your statement is misleading, especially for the beginners...

How do you display the EXIF data when downloading a "store original"?

If you have a Windows PC, after you download an image, go to the folder it is in, right click on the filename, select "properties", then "details".
If you have an image processor (aka editor) from your camera manufacturer, use it to list what you downloaded, right click on the filename and select "properties".

With the advent of image stabilization, the need for a tripod has diminished, to the point where a photographer may seldom need one to do his photography.

Of course, some conditions demand a tripod for attaining a good exposure.

A tripod functions as an another accessory that has its place.
