Elon Musk is amazing. One of his cars is going into orbit around Mars, and he was sending live video of it for a couple of hours. There are references to the Starman movie, David Bowie, and Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - and Nicola Tesla, of course. Amazing pictures. I wonder, though, is that actually a dummy in the car, or is it a disgruntled employee?

Question...is that a drone camera? How else do you get shots that are away from the car and shoot back at it???
The issue with taking stuff to space has always been the cost per pound. Twenty years ago when I worked at Lockheed Martin they were trying to reduce the cost per pound by a magnitude or two.

Dont think drones as we know them would fly in the vacuum of space, but perhaps its a really long selfie-stick?

Yes, amazing accomplishment, and also a gigantic waste of money. Yes I know, it's his money. But think of the good this could have done with an actual technical space beneficial program, or even just using that money to feed real people.

I think one could build a drone that would work in space especially if you can put a car in space. It would not use propellers that is pretty certain. What are the lines trailing off to the right of the front shot? The side shot clearly has to be shot from off the car. Perhaps they will put a FedEx truck up there to make deliveries to the ISS...

Waste of money how? If you are testing a heavy lift vehicle then you need something or several things to actually lift. So perhaps he tries to make news with sending his car up there...IF it actually went up. Otherwise I guess he could just haul rocks or bars of lead up to space for the test. We here on earth waste huge amounts of money every day, way more than what a space shot could waste.

Todd Ferguson

Right. In a head-on view of the car, you can see two poles sticking out to the side - probably where the camera is mounted.

When NASA tested the Saturn V, they filled the capsule with tons of water. The cost of the car was peanuts compared with the cost of a satellite or a scientific experiment. He needed some weight, and one of his cars provided weight, advertising, and the "Wow!" factor of public interest.

You can also see poles extending off the front of the car for another camera.

You can expect Elon to be posting a question here.

"What's that thing behind the Tesla, with the blue and green lights? Lens flare or UFO?"

The full launch was amazing to watch. Seeing the rockets maneuvered back to
their landing pads simultaneously was very impressive. How cool is it that
they get re-used!

He's probably kicking himself that he didn't think of that.

Right! If that had been in a sci-fi movie a few years ago, it would have stretched credibility. Too bad the landing at sea didn't work.

So the original Tesla Roadster sets a new record for the fastest car on Earth, no wait, the fastest car in our Solar System! 26,000 miles/hour when it separated from the Falcon Heavy! Try and beat that Ferrari and Mc Claren!
