Was there ever a "Best" 35mm Film SLR? ... if so, what was it, in your opinion?

I think that the Nikon F2 was THE break through camera. It set up the world for all future slrs.

Comon guys the Nikon F and all Nikons into the 80's were terrific. And the later versions D300 D700 etc. were a great experience.

I disagree. It was the the best of the mechanical SLRs, but the "breakthrough" camera was the original F. My opinion.

1959 ... it was a game-changer ... the F2 set the standard for the 70s, as the F had set the standard for the 60s ....

Chris T will have to start another thread for this sequence of Nikon cameras - "Break through Cameras" - because it is hard to justify any of them as "The Best" {every year we seem to get a new "the best" as long as they are developing new designs} .... but it is also difficult to justify any of them as "THE Breakthrough", because it took so many breakthroughs to get where we are now, including

1936
Ithagee Kine Exakta
first 35mm SLR

1947
Rectaflex
first eye level view finder

1954
Asahiflex
first instant return mirror

Chris T will have to start another thread for this... (show quote)

I'll give you that, RE ... certainly, there were more "break-throughs" in 35mm camera design, before the Nikon F ...

a) the 35mm camera itself (with look-down-into format) b) the eye-level finder c) the SLR format, introduced by Asahi ....

But, there's no denying - Nikon took all that to a whole new level ... and Canon wasn't far behind, either ....

As far as me starting anymore threads ... I'm still debating that ... lost my internet access on March 2nd, during the big snowstorm, when a tree fell down on the phone-line ... it took me 2-3 weeks afterwards, to get it sorted out. Since being back on, I've only caught up with comments left whilst I was out.

I'd no idea putting up two new ones a day for six months - had such a strong impact, in so many ways. ... Perhaps, one day .... thanks, RE ....
