Nikon photomic meters also had a window to view the f stop on the lens (the small white stops printed at the back of the lens)

Oh, did they, Mobius?

I forgot about that ....

I have no idea what the "best" camera was - probably the Canon A1. I learned on the Canon FtB and then purchased a T90 and was very pleased with it. My brother worked for an intelligence arm of the US government. This sometimes involved photographic documentation (not necessarily surreptitious photography) . I was surprised and impressed when he showed me the photography equipment they provided him and taught him the basics of use - it was a T90 with an assortment of lenses!

Oh, I agree, Steve ... the Canon A1 was right up there .... was my favorite, too ...

Then the T series came in ... T70 (mine - now) the T80, and the T90 ... a new age - plasticky cameras ... but, inside ... a world of innovation ...

T90s were favored by a lotta folks ... government groups ... services ... police agencies ... but then Digital arrived ...

My vote is for the Nikon F. I still have mine and everything works fine. It traveled all over the country with me and is still rock solid. I am planning to go back to using it in some measure, even though my Nikon DSLR is doing great. I still have my Nikkormat FTn and an Alpa. The F is still the best I ever handled.

I don't know about best, but my favourite film camera was a Minolta - the first auto-focus camera they made. There were fantastic lenses available to go with it. So sharp, you could see the hairs on a child's face.

This one's open ... you can include any manufacturer - past or present. Just trying to get an accurate assessment from everybody who's used them (or, still is ....)

My original FM is still going strong.

The F was a fantastic camera, G ... I agree ... Nikkormat, too (I still have my EL) ....

Alpa is no longer making 35mm SLRs ... they went out, came back ... now focused only on elite MFs ....

And there's not many of them, is there, Deb?

Minoltas were fantastic ... and now, Sony is putting out similar quality dig cams ... the a77 and a77 II - best of breed ...

And - they can use any Minolta or Konica glass ever made, too ....

Check 'em out, DebAnn ....

Yes Chris, I stupidly sold my Minolta lenses to someone using a Sony - for peanuts. I should have saved them and bought a Sony myself. At least I still have some film shots taken with them a long time ago.

The best one that I ever had Was the Canon F-1 35mm, still have it, haven't used it in over 15 years. Did underwater photography in an Ikelite housing, and have had it down around 90 ft, and up in the air at about 30,000 ft. That is why when I went digital, I bought Canon. Right now I have 4 Digitals, first one I bought was the 40D, then the 50D, and then a 5D MK II and now I have the best camera in the world, ( my world ) 5DS R 50.6 MP.

Well, DBW ... it may not be the BEST DSLR, right now ... but it's certainly the 35mm FF DSLR with the highest RES .... incredible!!!!

It takes a MF to match it ....

The F1 was a great 35mm SLR ... still one of the best ones ever made ....

That IS a shame, Deb ... didn't know at the time you could still use them, huh?

The a77 has really shot up, of late ... around $1500 - I understand ... more than the a77 II is ....

But you can pick up an alpha a68 for around $600 I believe ... top-deck LCD, but only a 2.7" LCD ....

And then you'd need a lens ... maybe pick up a used Minolta for a song .... perhaps?
