Was there ever a "Best" 35mm Film SLR? ... if so, what was it, in your opinion?

A small window which views through the bottom of the viewfinder with the aid of a small lens below the pentaprism housing It shows directly the settings on the barrel of the lens, which, of course, were set using the rings round the lens. If you altered shutter speed or aperture or both then you could see it in the viewfinder as it happened. Where the name comes from I don't know.

Interesting, Del ... actually showed IN the VF, huh?

I don't know, either ... but I'll bet I could take a stab or two at it ...

Had a friend in high school who used a Vivitar 35mm SLR. He absolutely loved it. Had several lenses for it. Does Vivitar make cameras anymore? Had a great Series 1 70-210mm lens also but do not see it anymore either.

Vivitar never made anything. They did design and market their designs. The Vivitar SLR’s were made by Cosina. I too learned in one. The first three editions of their Series 1, 70-210 line were very good.

I think that the commotion over loosing 1/3 of a stop through the pellical mirror was too much of a marketing hurdle. As I recall the meter was on the mirror surface. Or was that Topcon - another underrated camera. Did you ever see their 300 mm f 2.8 lens. Probably not. The U.S. government was snapping up as many as they could. Or, how about the Cannon 7s and it's amazing f 1.1 50mm reportage lens. No contrast, but, it's flat contrast in low light was a singular effect.

This one's open ... you can include any manufacturer - past or present. Just trying to get an accurate assessment from everybody who's used them (or, still is ....)

I loved my Minolta SRT-101 until the meter quit working. Had it repaired, but it failed again soon thereafter. I replaced it with a Nikon 6006, which I never really developed any love for...

Nikon F
51 years with no failure. Deserts and jungles on 4 continents. Still used on occasion. And I paid for it new with one night's penny ante poker winnings in Sunny Southeast Asia. ;-)

Leica M6 did everything I could possibly ever want from a camera, and the Hasselblad with an 80mm was amazing too!

Ah, yes ... the M6 ... that was a beaut, eh, Robert?

Hassy, too .... but, then ... MF .... not 35mm ....

Tough to beat images taken with MF cams - even now ....

Maybe not ... but we came to know their cameras, lenses and flash units, under the Vivitar name, Kiron ....

I don't think that Vivitar 650-1300 is actually theirs, either ... probably just an Opteka, with the Vivitar name on it ....

But, it just goes to show - they still have SOME prestige, eh, Kid?

Never met up with a Canon 7s, RA ... musta missed it ...

Topcon got out of the DSLR market ... but they're still in the optical field ...

Was it as much as a third of a stop, RA?

I don't know how much is lost by the SLT cameras, but the use of an EVF ... kinda negates whatever loss there may be ....

You know, there's a good used market in Minoltas, Bill ... look around ... KEH, e-bay, Adorama, B&H, Amazon ... you never know what you might find ....

And, of course ... all Minolta and Konica lenses will fit on all of Sony's "A" mount series cameras ....

So, penny-wise you were on that night, huh, John?

The Nikon F was a great camera, wasn't it?

So is the Nikon Df .... every bit the camera the old F was, but Digital ...

I believe "Vivitar" was a trading name of Dixons Photograhic - a UK based retail electronics comany from the 1960s and 70s. They used to market Mamiya stuff under this trading name.

Really, Del?

Do you mean the old Mamiya/Sekor 35mm SLR line?

Or, do you also mean things like the Mamiya RB67, RZ67, M645 series, and the current Mamiya Leaf Credo?

A Vivitar four-on-the-floor, there, huh, OR?

Glad the Exakta enjoyed the swim, and toweled off, okay ....

Sorry about your film, though ...

Still - you wound up finding a good second use for that lens, huh? .... doesn't the front glass catch the light, though? ... can be distracting ... no?

Only when I had the top down. It was at about a 45' angle and got a good view of the ladies legs. ...can I say that now days?

Rollie and Nikon helped kick the props out from under the Speed Graphic - the ubiquitous “standard” camera of news photogs and the curse of Navy photographers everywhere.

Nikon photomic meters also had a window to view the f stop on the lens (the small white stops printed at the back of the lens)

Yup, but it’s not film.

No, it's not, Greg .... you're right, there ...

But what you can DO with it - is so much better than what you could do with any old film camera ....
