I would start by increasing shutter speed to 1/1000+. I normally shoot these birds at 1/1250. You may benefit from checking Steve Perry's site and viewing some of his videos. http://backcountrygallery.com/secrets-nikon-autofocus-system/
provides valuable info. Learning more about your autofocus system will be a great aide!

thanks for the info.i am reading his article about nikon auto focus system..will ck his other info. starting out trying to capture BIF was probably a mistake..shoud tackle more "basic" projects first.like composition which for me at this point is considerably more difficult than I imagined..thx for the reply,jim

I started with BIF on the early side because I enjoy it and love the challenge. It's a work in progress and this forum and the owner's manual help. Learning the capabilities of the camera goes hand in hand with understanding the exposure triangle and loads of practice. There is a lot on talent here on the forum!
