Hey guys just need to vent a little about my 7100. The little door to the battery compartment came off and I lost it. This is the 2nd time on this camera and I lost one on a 3200. It always has been snapped in place. Is it just me? Very frustrating !!! I guess the solution would be to put a battery grip on. Am I right? Never used a grip before

Or a piece of gaffer's tape.

Yes, a battery grip would be beneficial. You can buy third party on those. Vello comes to mind. Or you can get in touch with Nikon Support in LA and see it you can purchase one. And last, don't lose them anymore.

Not sure why that has happened...especially on two separate cameras. As I first read your post I was going to suggest a battery pack. You can pick up knock-offs fairly cheap, and it gives you an added power resource. I’ve got aftermarket son my D7200 & D610, and they have held up just as good as the Nikon model I bought for my D750. Don’t let the added size deter you...I’ve had battery packs on every digital body I’ve owned going back to my Olympus E1. No real added weight, and my smallish hands have no problems with extra real estate.

A battery grip will add a lot of height to your camera. And you won’t be able to access the battery without taking it off (you can use the grip for battery, but then you might lose the door on it).

A custom base plate with battery door access will protect the door, add only a little height, and allow quick mounting of the camera on a tripod.

FWIW: IF you pursue a battery grip, you should really consider finding a genuine Nikon grip - it will be built better than the 3rd party grips for sure - your D7100 has a magnesium skeleton that hides under the plastic skin, so does the Nikon OEM battery grip. 3rd party cheap grips will not have the magnesium skeleton, nor will they guarantee flawless electrical connections.

I have owned several Neewer battery grips - they work, but had electrical contact issues and I always worried the tripod socket would pull out of the bottom of the grip, after getting a Nikon OEM grip for my D7100 those worries disappeared, as did the electrical connection problems.

The Nikon grip for the D7100 IS expensive, but do you skimp on glass & camera bodies?

To answer your question about the battery door - yes, a grip would definately cover the batter door in the camera - it will not open nor will it be seen with a grip on the camera - will it prevent you from losing it if you take the grip off to remove the in camera battery? Well, thats subjective.

Battery grips for the D7100 have no "door" they have a battery tray that slides in and out that holds the battery, or the AA cells in the alternate tray that comes with the unit - I would say you might need to work at losing them.

On my grips/cameras I always install an ARCA SWISS plate so camera & grip slide into any of my tripod ARCA SWISS clamps with no need to remove/change anything.

FWIW - I much prefer the added heft the grip adds to my APS-C camera - makes it fit my hands better I guess.

I forgot to close mine and it popped off when I put it down. It popped back on though; now I am just waiting to lose it. I suppose that is a good excuse to get a grip!

Drive on up to Beverly Hills and go visit the Nikon repair facility at Wilshire and San Vicente. Buy a replacement battery door and ask them to fit it to your camera body. When you're done, drive east on Wilshire to Fairfax, turn left and go up to Samys Cameras. Buy a battery grip. Then figure out what the reason is that battery doors have such a short lifespan on your cameras.

Gaffer tape covering the battery will, over time, expose the camera's innards to the environment.

Thanks for the tip. Exactly what I was thinking looking for a shop now. No way would I use tape. Don't really want or need a grip. And your right if I was to get one I would only get the best expensive or not.
