Hi all. Was looking to get an additional battery for my D7200 and wondered who has used the EN-EL15a with this camera. I'll most likely use this in my grip to extend battery time and want to be sure it will communicate properly with the camera. The Nikon website says it is compatible but real-world experience is always the best guide.
I could, of course, just get the older EN-EL15 version, but like most of the folks on UHH, we seem to want to the "latest and greatest". I did look up the previous comments but was hoping there might be some new info.
Thanks and Happy New Year to all!
The EN-EL15a is not suggested “because it is the latest and greatest”. If you read previous threads regarding this question, you would know that the EN-EL15a was designed by Nikon with better features to accomodate Nikon’s newer, more powerful (and power hungry) cameras. Go to Google and type “Ugly Hedgehog EN-EL15a battery” and read the advice of knowledgeable users.
The EN-EL15/15a is the recommended battery for Nikon's advanced intermediate/pro level DSLR cameras. You can also buy this battery in a third party version as a Watson Brand. If the battery is recommended by the manufacturers, why would there be a problem? Also, Watson batteries work just fine, despite opposition to them by many photographers on this forum. Good luck.
Nikon is probably the best source, rather than another UHH thread. Nikon says you are good to go.
The usual theme with Nikon is that if it is the same model number with an A or B appended to it, it is backwards compatible.

The "A" version will work just fine. There is no physical difference between the two versions other than the updated control chip in the newer version.
There is a LOT of misinformation posted above, just ignore it.

Just curious as to what misinformation was posted above? Perhaps you can enlighten us.

Just read your own post, that about covers it.

My own post was a link, that also gave that same information from Nikon included in the link. I’m so glad that your self bloviating brilliance is so much more accurate than an actual press release from the manufacturer.
Care to try again, or are you just going to pull more inaccuracies out of wherever you got the last one...

Your blog "link" is bogus misinformation (AKA Fake news). If you want the true info try going directly to NikonUSA.com for the truth and ACTUALLY READ the over 5 year old serial number specific recall.
On this link, there was another link indicating that if the 9th digit on the battery had a letter E or F, it was a Nikon recall battery. I can remember reading posts on this forum, some time ago, where D500 owners could send in a certain battery with a wrong code number, in exchange for a free exchange. Battery incompatibility was supposedly the reason. Hopefully, this battery will have no more recalls.

The recall you linked to had nothing to do with the "A" version. It referred to 2 batches of the original that had an issue.

The Lot numbers, which were alphanumeric, indicated a voluntary recall on the 9 digit lot # which had a letter of E&F. These were the voluntary recalled batteries. EN-EL15. Not the 15a. As already mentioned on this post. The 15 is discontinued by Nikon and Watson. However, some other third party batteries, still use the 15 and not the 15a, and claim they will work on any camera requiring a 15a. I think I would pass on those cheap third party batteries. I buy only Nikon and Watson's.
I have a D750 with the A battery and used it in my D7200 no problems.
