My adult daughter wants a new camera and has $1000 to spend. Wants a point and shoot with some reach, she is tired of changing lenses on the Canon camera she has and does not use it. Wants to photograph birds but not birds in flight. I know there are Canon cameras with 50X lenses but are there other brands with similar reach? Many thanks!
The Panasonic Lumix Bridge cameras with the Super Zoom are very good. If an FZ70 that is great for birds, insects and jus about anything else. The range is equivalent to a 28 to 1200 mm zoom. The sensor is of course smaller but the quality of the photos is very good.

Canon & NIkon have very good Bridge camera's with up to 50-100 zooms
Nikon P900. There have been quite a few photos taken with it posted here on UHH. Very long reach. One of the things I like about it is it has an eye level viewfinder. Most point and shoots don't that I have seen.
A lot of people swear by (not at) the Canon SX50 and SX60. The SX50 is no longer available but you can find them used here and on Ebay. Also eye level viewfinders.
You can probably tell I favor eye level viewfinders over the viewing screens.
The Nikon P900 would be a good one for her. It has a zoom range of 24mm to 2000mm.
I have both the Canon PS SX60 and the Nikon Coolpix 900, I prefer the SX60 over the CP900. The long range on the CP900 is hard to hand hold and get sharp images, at least for me. Also, the CP900 is only jpeg format, while the SX60 does have RAW, if that matters. But, I do like how the CP900 feels in hand over the SX60.
There are many P&S type with very long zoom. They do have the reach but personally I wouldn't be able to use them well. The lens is too long which needs high shutter speed. The lens is slow coupled with the small sensor which can't be used at very high ISO make them extremely difficult to use at long end.

Take a look at the Sony RX10 iii. She could get a used one for that $.
Also take a look at the Sony RX100 iv - new is about $850; the iii is about $700.

Mike ... "up to 50-100 zooms"
Did you mean - up to 1000mm ???
Bridges now - are - at least - up to 1000mm (the ones with the 1/2.3" micro-sensor) ... and many go to 1200, 1400, 1500, and 2000 - for the Nikon Coolpix P-900!
1" sensor bridges - like the Sony Cybershot RX 10 series - have 24-200 (I/II) and 24-600 (III/IV) ... and many Lumix bridge cams also reach out to 600mm.
The older Bridges had shorter max. focal lengths, usually in the region from 720mm to 810, or 840 .... but, now - ALL the micro ones are minimally 1200mm.

John - the range on the FZ-70 - goes from 20mm to 1200mm. The newer FZ-80 has the same exact range, but also has a Touch-Screen ....

I just love the FZ 70 and use t more often than my other DSLRS.

I think the Nikon P900 is the king of reach.
