A Painter Must Paint.

That is dedication to one art, no post modernist rubbish here. Most people would just take a photo then go indoors and paint that but others are purists.
Technically the rules of composition apply. I think you have white balanced for the snow which has given good tones to the artists face. The top 10% - 15% is a slight shade darker but I don't think there is a way around this. Maybe a tad more brightness or contrast to lighten the building but without playing with it I don't know what this would do to the snow.
Nice subject matter. Good B&W. He feels static sitting in the center of the photo. Would suggest cropping vertically at the door knob behind his leg, and cropping about 2/3 of the snow out from under him. That removes an eye-catching section behind him and reduces the amount of empty space in the photo without losing the outdoor feel. As SATS suggests, increasing the overall brightness a bit might help.
Robert, I have tweeted it a bit, cropped it along the lines Voss suggested and brightened it a bit. I would never put it up without your permission. Alternatively I can send it to you as a PM. The choice is yours.
SATS & Voss, I've taken your good suggestions and made the revisions. Tell me what you think now please

That is a whole level better.
SATS, yes please PM it to me. Thanks!

I'd say it's a definite improvement. It simplifies the photo, keeps the context, and keeps the "dedicated artist" feeling.

Wow that's pretty crazy. I wonder if he is painting a white rabbit in a snowstorm. :D Thanks for sharing.

I agree, much better composition on the revisions. Now I like it! I have a internal rule. Only put the subject in the center if I am filling the frame with the subject.

Good rule. I've put it in my rule book too. Thanks for the advice.
Brrr!!!, that looks cold. There is a group of about 6 guys that get together every Saturday morning to paint outside where I live. They were right across the road from my house a couple weeks ago painting landscapes. My how I envy them. The talent they have eluded me. You have an eye with the camera. Just stick to what Voss and Sats have to say. They are very talented. That is a nice shot.

Thank you. Yes, I have come to realize how talented they are. I'm thankful that they're so helpful also.
I wonder if the cold affects how his paints flow out. Just a random thought. What an interesting picture of a dedicated artiste.
