A while back I posted that I had done a short test with my various Nikon DSLRs. [

This first image is "the scene" as it appeared to me from camera position. That brown thing 90feet away is a box I chose because it is roughly the same shape as my monitor and it has readable type. Next is a 1000 pixel wide image of the box from the Df images, followed by similar images from the D800 and finally the D850.

Definitely better resolution from the D850 but my question is What lens?

From the OP's original post "my trusty Nikkor 50mm f1.4 AF-D"
What a Difference....and yes , What Lens ?...remembering from the lenses you mentioned in the other thread , there was a standard lens , is that the one ?
Rich1939 beat me to it :-)
Lens was AF Nikkon 50mm f/1.4D set at f/8 which, as I recall from lens tests by various mags when it was new, is its "sweet spot."

These results would not be unexpected - the more pixels in the capture - the more detail. Doesn't the D850 have about 45mp.
I'm curious about the D800 image and how the white(ish) border a little more than half way down is flared. I don't expect there is a quick answer to that but ouch

I don’t know. I’d have give the Nikon the edge. It is just a tad better than the Nikon. Just my opinion.
Rich, quick-and-dirty. The box was sealed with clear tape and I was taking these shots in direct sunlight. I'm thinking that, for that image, the sun was in a perfect spot to shoot some specular highlights back at me.

Thanks, that would make sense.
joer and kb6, just shows how quickly technology is changing. I didn't post a "close-up" from the D700 set because it was just too disappointing. Some of my favorite images were taken on a trip-of-a-lifetime to the Canadian Rockies when the D700 was at/near top-of-the-line (
http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-497005-1.html). Now that I see results from the D850, I wonder how much better they all would have been if I had had that camera for the trip.
The D700 is no slouch, either, but as you said, the technology has gone leaps and bounds over what it was when the first DSLR came out. Yes, I'd love to have a D850, though for what I like to do, a D500 would be ideal.
