December 2017 Super Moon

Well just a few hours away from being a true Super Moon, I had to go out and play. The closeups are with my Canon 5D MKlll through my 127mm telescope at 952mm. The wide field shots were same camera with the Canon EF 70-300mm IS USM. These were taken in Lake Havasu City Arizona on the island looking back at the city.

Thanks Joe. They do look a little better downloaded. My last years shots were in the morning and you could see the city better without the blown out brightness of the moon. Appreciate the comments.

What incredible shots! I especially love the second photo. I took a few shots from our rear deck of the moon high in the night sky around 9pm. The fog had partially cleared by then. Haven’t yet looked closely at the results but know they won’t be a patch on yours!

Thank you Paul. I had to fight the contrast between the dark sky and bright moon to be able to get much of the city in foreground. Last years were better.

Just looked at my pics while they are still on the camera and the fog has completely wiped out the detail of the moon. Will be very surprised if they can be ‘tweaked’ at all. Shared your pics with Jeannie and she, too, loved the second shot. Are your last year’s shots on this forum?

The moon can be quite fickle especially the atmospheric distortions.

Sorry! Can’t resist being a smart-arse! As in not being able to resist adding that it’s not just the moon that can be fickle and distort reality. (It’s OK, I am getting up soon!)

I believe the distortion comes from the fact it's a 952mm focal length and the field of view is quite narrow, plus when you crop the image it fools one eye into that perception. Same effect if I posted an image of the Orion Nebula, it would look on the screen very large, but naked eye it looks like a star. It's still a good way for me to practice my hobby

You missed my sarcasm! Probably just as well!

I realized it was sarcasm, just wanted to clarify for others. The steadiness of morning air opposed to early evening air is much better or maybe I just got focused better last year.
