Moire - Tip on a potential problem

When I think or am aware of a potential moire problem I tilt my camera to the right or left side.

Why does this work? Simply because by angling the camera you change the sensor capture orientation. The pixels row are still parallel but not to the scene. No line synchronization takes place.

Left of right? This depends one the scene.

Does it work all the time? No. Moire is the alignment of light over the sensor. Changing the sensor orientation may make it in sync with other things. I have not seen that yet but there is always a possibility.

Moire is often found when shooting landscapes that have houses whose roof is made of tiles or shingles that are visible. New high definition cameras are in theory less prone to moire but that is true only up to a point.

Anyway, if you suspect anything like that will happen, tilt the camera lightly.
