Two weeks ago while out at Pt Loma shooting the lighthouse, I also shot a couple of panos of the San Diego Bay. The clouds were nice. The hazy skies, not so much.

Hello,

Could you write something about the difference between vertical and horizontal camera selection reasons?

Use a new topic for that if you can.

I shot in both orientations because I wanted to compare the difference between an apple and an orange.

Just a novice here—and not the OP—but I would think a reason to shoot vertical would be to take advantage of skies and foregrounds.

There is that but also if you tighten the shot you can also get more details using a different (longer) lens.

If you use the same lens, you are indeed correct.

Taking your panorama shots with the camera in the vertical (portrait) orientation prevents your final panorama from being too skinny. It will include more foreground and/or more sky.

Similarly, when taking a vertical panorama like a tall building, set your camera in the horizontal (landscape) orientation so the picture will not be too skinny and more will be shown on the right and left side.

Be sure to overlap 50% so that the software has more points to align the images. You will usually get a jagged edge which you can crop out or if you want the extra part of the picture you can clone in the gaps.

Try it. It is fun.
