Landscape - subject and orientation.

Since I am mostly shooting scenic shots, those tend to be "landscape", but when I shoot flowers I often change to "portrait" mode. Certain subjects just lend themselves to the vertical format, too. Looking at recent work, I'd guess maybe 10% of my photos are shot in portrait mode, the rest landscape. Exceptions are when I am trying for a panorama that needs some depth--I shoot those in portrait mode. And sometimes I'll crop portrait out of landscape to emphasize a subject.

It depends on the situation. During some shoots, it is 50/50. On others it could be 70/30. 70 horizontal, etc. I still have my medium format camera, Mamiya 1000S pro. 645 format. And I still have film for it! The format is 2 1/4 x 1 7/8, so it still lends itself to horizontal or vertical format.

It depends on what you are shooting and where the resulting images will be displayed.

When I am shooting real estate for online publication with an ad I NEVER shoot portrait mode! That’s because all such online images are formatted tor landscape presentation. If I then include a portrait mode image it is presented with the height of a landscape image. That makes it much smaller and less effective in presentation.

So, again, it depends on the subject matter and the intended use of the image.

I'd say about 60% horizontal, 40% vertical orientation. Depends on the subject, and what I think works best. If I'm not quite sure, I often shoot both and decide later which to keep.

Haven't shot square in so long but when I did it was a heavy side toward horizontal

I always used to shoot in the horizontal position. But i have started using the vertical position more than every lately.

Because your eyes are side by side, a horizontal composition is more natural than a vertical. I shoot more horizontals unless the subject demands a vertical shot...redwood trees, giraffe, flagpole, etc.

Chris, I shoot both horizontal and vertical, depending on which seems to make the best composition. I also occasionally shoot at an angle! Often I will take a landscape image first, then another one in portrait, because each provides a different perspective on the same subject. As for cropping, I often shoot a little wider than the anticipated "finished product" so as to be absolutely sure I got in everything important! Once I have captured the big picture, then I will often look at parts of it more closely and take photos accordingly! Having an L-bracket on the camera makes switching easy.

An "angle"shot!
An "angle"shot!...
