I am just starting to explore different software for editing. Long time user of LR & PS. At this point all my raw photos have be catalog into LR not using a sidecar (embed xmp). If I where to switch to another editing program in the future and I have thousands of edited images which program or how to get a program to read those edits. Keeping them in the raw format (do not want to export to jpg)? Hope that makes sense. The reason for looking is to keep proactive on editing software.

You need to make use of sidecar files - the edits will be written to the catalog as well as placed within a tiny sidecar file. The raw file remains as it came from the camera, and deletion of the sidecar file leaves the original raw as it was.

There is a check box in the Lightroom catalog preferences to turn on auto writing of XMP data so sidecar files are written as changes are made to the raw image.

You can force XMP writing at any time from the METADATA menu orby shortcut key as well.

You can also make use of DNG files - convert your raw files into DNG files and then you can embed the edits with the DNG file - no sidecar files needed since Adobe can write to the DNG raw format.

I failed to mention, if you do not write your edits out in sidecar files or switch to DNG as your raw+edit container you would need to export your images to get the edits out of the Lightroom Catalog, but then that "bakes" the edits into the exported file, which is not the best solution. You could always force write the XMP out at the time of switching to another program, which would create your sidecar files as well.

FWIW - I have imported all my raws into Lightroom and converted them from Nikon NEF to DNG, and recently from Canon CR2 to DNG - I store my edits in my catalog and auto write XMP changes out to the DNG files - just recently I started storing my raws as the original CR2 files, and writing XMP data as sidecar files in hopes to speed up my processing a bit.
