Sony a6000 wireless flash mode grayed out

I've had my a6000 for about 6 months. I'm trying to use off camera flash but all the tutorials I've read, says to go to focus mode, then turn on the wireless mode. Well, my "wireless mode" is grayed out and a message comes up saying "this option is currently disabled". My question is, do I need a trigger in the hot shoe for the wireless mode to be enabled? I have read that your pop-up flash can act as the in-camera trigger with the wireless mode on. I have 3 off camera flash units and they all work on the Sony hot shoe but cannot use them as slave units without turning on the wireless mode. What am I doing wrong? Help would be muchly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I have a n A6500 not the A6000 but I believe the correct steps are Camera settings---FLASH mode---Wireless (not Focus mode).
The error message indicated that you have some setting turned on (or off?) that is not compatible with wireless flash mode, no idea what that would be.
You should not need a separate trigger to use the wireless mode.
This tutorial looks like it covers the camera setup: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LFr2TbOZrK4

Gary Fong has two excellent videos about using the A6000. One is free, and one is cheap.

Thank you for your replies RWilson1942 and Jerryc41. I have already looked at each of the videos you suggested and non of them say anything about activating the wireless mode in the flash mode. There has got to be something to click or unclick to do that!!!! Appreciate you help though. I will post if I ever figure it out.....

I know you can use a flash trigger on the hot shoe to fire a related flash. I have something like below.

Thank you Jerryc41. Is that the trigger you use on your a6000? I guess that is what I'm going to have to get. The price is right!! Thanks again...Sylvia

I just looked it up, and yes, it is the same thing - NPT-04. I've used it on Nikon but not on the A6000. The Sony has a standard hot shoe, so it should work.
