What is the optimum size for a photo being posted to the Photo Gallery? Can you quote in inches and dpi please.

Thanks

I don't know what Photo Gallery you mean. However, for printing in magazines it usually is 300 dpi. What that converts to in inches depends on the size of the printed image. For a full 8 1/2 X 11" it is 2550 X 3300. For a 4 X 6" (a standard print size) it is 1200 X 1800.

At least, that is my understanding having done only a very little for print.

I mean the Photo Gallery on Ugly Hedgehog. I was getting an error message when trying to upload photos of approx. 8x10 at 300 dpi. So I tried uploading them at 150 dpi and that has worked. Thanks for replying.

The pictures you see initially are 600 pixels wide. The system will resize anything larger.

If you check "save original" the limit is 20 mb per post. A width of 1920 pixels is a pretty good choice. The original picture that shows up, referred to here as the thumbnail, will still be reduced to 600 pixels wide.

When presented on digital media it is the actual number of pixels that matter. The monitor, tablet, etc., determines the number per inch. It is typically fixed.

It's clearly stated in the FAQ for the gallery: max 600 pixels on the wide side. The dpi /ppi is immaterial. And the file size must be 20MB or smaller if attaching a file for download. The 600px is so the image isn't compressed. If you set it to download, you can use the original dimensions, although you don't need to go larger than 2048px on the long side.

All the images I upload to UHH are 3000 pixels on the wide side, and I've never had an issue. So, it isn't a hard and fast rule.

Being an engineer, I get hung up on stuff. To me 1mb is one millibit. 1MB is one MegaByte.

You've missed the point ... The 600px is for an uncompressed thumbnail. Surely you agree your 3000 pixel image does not display that large until the download is clicked... It's in the FAQ ...

You don't even have to use that many pixels in order for your photo to look good online. A photo that is a little over 900 X 1200 pixels will show up quite nicely. The nice thing, too, about sizing that small is that nobody will be able to copy your photo for print purposes or anything else commercial.
