The future of portable computing devices

After having used iOS11 beta a while, and now the released version, I could see a future where a device like my iPad Pro would be my portable device. I would not have a “Laptop”. It’s smaller and lighter, a joy to use, I love the keyboard and the touch screen. But IMHO it has been hobbled by iOS. MacOS was for years named after big cats. I opined that iOS should have followed suit and be named after cats, with the first version being named Tabby.

And why doesn’t the iPad simply run Mac programs? Why do I have to buy new apps for the ipad? It’s annoying. This is where I think Microsoft has done a smart thing with their surface running the same programs as the PC. But I digress.

I can see iPad like devices replacing the bigger heavier laptop PCs we lug around. We will pug them into accessories, big screens, keyboards, when at the office or home, just like we do with our laptop PCs. But when on the move we will have a small compact light device that is much easier to travel with, carry to meetings, etc.

FYI this was composed and sent from my iPad Pro

A friend was going to buy a laptop to replace her old broken HP, but she bought a new iPad, instead. Of course, she's not a power-user, like all of us here. : )

Tablets lock you into a small choice of apps. A Laptop or PC allows you greater choice and a lot of 'free' stuff!
Yes, tablets seem like a light alternative but like a cell phone - it can leave you frustrated. Sync often fails as does searching for specific files and emails.

Little tablets mean little keyboards. I use my laptop for typing, then transfer it to my tablet. Also my eyes have a problem editing photos on a small screen. My laptop has a 17" one, the tablet is only 10".

Re choice of Apps:
“The number of apps available for download in leading app stores as of March 2017: Android users were able to choose between 2.8 million apps. Apple's App Store remained the second-largest app store with 2.2 million available apps.

As far as Sync failures, I have not experienced the failures you describe. Perhaps it has something to do with your internet connectivity.

Which iPad did she purchase?

Today, my Mac is definitely the device of choice for me (power user). But that is changing. Case in point, I tend to upgrade every 3-5 years, but on my last upgrade I skipped the MacBookPro upgrade and instead bought this iPadPro that I am using to type this. I like this iPad Pro a lot. The hardware is great. It is the software that limits it. As I said the MacBookPro is still king due to MacOS, but iOS is making big strides and I can envision a horizon where iOS on an iPad will exceed what we can do today on our “power computers”.

When I bought my Samsung Galaxy Note 8, I also bought the DeX station for it. This little device is quite impressive. What it does is it transforms the Note 8 (the current best smartphone on the planet,) into power-user device. It has an HDMI connection, an Ethernet socket, 2 USB 3.0 connections and of course, a USB-C connection.

You slide in the Note 8 and the phone displays on the screen connected via HDMI. You can also connect a keyboard and a mouse using the USB ports, or do like I do and use Bluetooth input devices. You can also connect to the local network via wired Ethernet. And it charges your phone.

I was driving a 4K screen with the DeX station and it was magnificent. My Note 8 has over 300GB of onboard storage and I'm looking at using this combo when I travel instead of dragging my laptop. I can create content with this setup and it would be all on my Smartphone.

This is very neat.
