The larch trees are turning yellow...

Every year, the mountainsides turn yellow in spots because the larch are losing their leaves for the winter. For those who don't know, the larch is the only coniferous tree that loses its needles in the fall - that I'm aware of.

This picture shows some of the trees at Hellgate Canyon on the left where I-90 goes east out of Missoula. The "M" on the hillside stands for the University of Montana, the campus being at the base of that hill. The hill's name is Mt. Sentinel.

I'm not sure if they are the same species or even maybe the same trees just different names in different locales, but here in the Adirondacks we have the Tamarack pines that shed their needles each year.

Nice shot and interesting info. I just googled and Tamarack is the same tree as larch.

Hi, cochese! I just looked up Tamarack trees and find that they are a species of Larch, that there are several species. I didn't know that. Thank you so much for commenting! I learned something new.
