I had a delivery of a Nikon D810 by UPS; the seller, B&H, advised that a signature was required at delivery. I received a tracking notification that it was delivered and I had signed for it. I hurried to the front door and the package was sitting right there. Basically, signature required is meaningless; this happened to me more than once with UPS.

The driver that did that, just put his job at risk..... A signature of some sort had to be made to clear your delivery off his portable unit.

Hi everyone,
I am expecting a delivery from UPS today for a Canon eos 77D from Adorama. The cost was $799.00 and upon reviewing the tracking information it doesn’t mention a signature being required. It seems to me that any item with that dollar amount would require a signature upon delivery. Is it me, or does that seem odd? Luckily I am in a position that I can watch out for the delivery today, but if I wasn’t, I would really be concerned. Has anyone else had this experience?

It might be a bit late for this but maybe for next time: 1) if you order by calling ask the sales person to send it with signature required. When I ordered from B & H, my sales rep told me that I would have to sign for it. 2) set up an account with UPS and once the package is shipped you can request they hold it at the nearest UPS center for pick up. 3) For your camera today, hopefully it’s beautiful fall weather and you can camp out on your front porch to wait on your new camera.
Too bad I can’t loan you my dog. All my dogs over the years instinctively DESPISE UPS and FEDEX drivers so they’ll bark and howl when the truck pulls up.

Best of luck and congratulations on your new camera!

I'll add another comment. This is not UPS, USPS, or any of the other shippers mentioned, but I was expecting a wine club shipment today that required a signature from someone over 21, and I found it sitting happily on the doorstep, all by itself, no signature, no knock, no doorbell, nada. Perhaps I should call the winery....

We get wine deliveries from Kendall Jackson and have always needed to sign. But our many Amazon deliveries and others just sit on the porch. Fortunately, we have an alert neighbor who saves our stuff when we are out of town for a few days. Of course, it could just as well be an alert thief.

I’m actually more concerned with the drivers finding the Right address. Out of the last 5 deliveries this year, two were left at the wrong address UPS just dropped it off at the front door, while Fed Ex got the signature of a 10 year old boy, and then marked his record that “he left it with the customer’s son” I’m 70, and don’t have kids. Luckily both of these delivery points had responsible people living there, and called me.

Can't a person request a "signature required" delivery?

If you are expecting a valuable package and are concerned you can't be home to pick it up, you have an option to have the package delivered to your closest UPS store where you can pick it up at your leisure. You need to sign up for a UPS account to have that option.

As an aside, I prefer UPS to FedEx. The last package I received from FedEx had a new lens and some other items in it and when the delivery guy threw it on my front porch with me standing there, I saw the package had been badly crushed and one end was totally torn off the package. I feared the worst and pointed that out to the delivery guy. He said he couldn't do anything about it and if I refused delivery he would send it back to B&H. So I opened the package with him standing there irritated that I was taking up his time. I inspected every item and there was no damage to anything. The new lens in it's box did not have a mark on it. I was lucky. I've never had a problem like that with UPS. However I suppose that could happen with either carrier.

We never get mail at our home. Never give thieves a chance. Our address for postal service, USPS UPS and FEDEX is a mail drop. Always someone there to sign, and everything we receive is safe.

You can always ask the company for a signature when then are sending out a package or you can go to ups and set it up that every time they receive a delivery for you that you must sign for it.

I ship a lot with Fedex and they always ask if a signature is required. I have also shipped with UPS and they also ask if a signature is required. It is up to the sender to require the signature. We have a little alcove where the delivery person can leave the package and our delivery driver always rings the door bell pluse I have two dogs that alert when the delivery van pulls up.

I recently put in a video ring doorbell since our community mail box was broken into for the second time this year. For now I have to go to the post office to pick up my mail. The community mail boxes are now becoming popular for thieves. Luckly the mailboxes sit in direct line of sight of the doorbell. The door bell video also covers the alcove. I am also notified if anyone or anything is within range of the camera, sense it is set off with motion.

My son is a contractor for FedEx. I worked for him for over 12 years, I can tell you that when a package is stolen the contractor is usually held responsible. Even though insurance may cover or shipper sends replacement, the contractor is still fined. That is why you should request at least indirect signature when placing order.

Never had a problem with UPS delivery. If you sign up for UPS My Way, they will send you an email when the package has been delivered, and it is usually within a few minutes. I have noticed that most shippers today do not include a signature requirement on items less than $1000.

Seems about correct to me. Onus lies with the deliverer (not the recipient) to show that delivery was made. It may be inconvenient if package goes missing, but I do not see how the person who was supposed to receive can be penalized.

Good luck! You may be OK this time - but as we get closer to Christmas, the thieves that follow the UPS, USPS, and FEDEX trucks will come out big time!

The real story is UPS has been overwhelmed with Amazon delivieries. I live in a small private development and
They will deliver a box with value knock on door and head back to the truck. Their is no clear answer right now to the glut
of internet purchases and how to handle them. If I lived in New York City as i did years ago i don't know what they do
to insure deliveries. I watch the UPS delivery people and sometimes they look like some kind of game show
trying to fulfill their routes. I believe that some valuable deliveries do get a know on the door and signature.
I work from home and my wife is always here so it works. I order everything from Amazon usually cheaper
and delivered free with the Prime program.
