My wife hiked 8 miles near Tremont yesterday, she said mostly green, a few reds, she put peak closer to beginning of November. It has been very warm here up till Monday

The reds were likely Sumac, which is one of the first to turn...

Great Smokey Mountains will be awash in both color and crowds. There are lots of great ops around Brevard, as folks have suggested. I shot there a few years ago, and here is a link to my gallery of North Carolina ... I believe all the photos are labeled for locations. https://timenspace.smugmug.com/Collections/North-Carolina/

Nice pictures! Thanks for sending a link. Hitting color just right is tricky. I missed it in the UP but had a good time. Instead I think I will head over to the wetlands and see what is flying around there and wait on NC a week or 2 or 3.... here is the album from my recent UP trip.

I live 18 miles from Townsend. The Foothills Parkway runs across the crest of Chilhowee Mountain which I can plainly see from my house. The foliage is still green. It may be different in the higher altitudes of the Park. I really don't expect a peak next week. I plan to spend a couple of days in Gatlinburg next week and will make the trip from there to Cherokee hoping for some fall color.

I am now thinking I will wait a couple of weeks. I really appreciate all the feedback! Best wishes for some color and beauty!

Just a heads up. At this time of year it's so very crowded. Last year at this time, it took us over 2 hours to get from Cades Cove to Gatlinburg when going back thru the park...

Very true...ugh! Looking more like I will skate on the edges and try to go up Treemont one day and sunrise from the parkway then head over to Brevard area.

Truly appreciate the feedback...I am thinking I will wait at least 10 days or 2 weeks....12 hours is a long way to drive for green. I like it in the Spring when it has that brilliance of new leaf glow.

Spring green is beautiful not to mention the spring flowers.

Edit, for some reason I can't get the above link to all be a link, use the last part of the link too!

I clicked your link and I also only got the first part in my link. I am located in Birmingham, AL, not the smokies, but the map that came up for me was waterfalls in Alabama......many within a couple hours drive or less....many of which I had never heard of....thanks!

Meigs falls is visible from the road and is just east of the Townsand "Y". Near the Sugarlands Visitor Center (just to the west) is Laurel Falls, a paved walkway is about a 1 mile easy walk. The falls is large. Leave the park heading towards Cherokee make the first left and head for Maggie Valley. Watch carefully for signs on the right hand side of the road (you have a few miles to drive) that say Soco Falls. It is really spectacular. Three falls along a cliff wall.

Best sunset shot in the park is at the Morton Overlook. From the Newfound Gap parking lot, drive toward Gatlinburg. I think it is the third turn off on the left (it is the one with the biggest parking area) You will overlook a v alley with lots of trees (think color) and several mountain ranges all backed by a great sunset view.

I am a photographer and these locations are easy to get to and great for photos.

Good Luck!

Yours are gorgeous as well ... we have a similar eye for style. One great thing about the area is the variations in elevations. While we were there, the foliage continued to change moving from higher elevations (some of which we missed entirely) to the lower elevations. Happy hunting!

Thanks![/quote]

There's a comma after a couple of the numbers, that's why it won't work.

Thanks for all the locations and times best to use them! These will be on the list if I venture into the park...crowds...ick. Some of them look close to the edge of the park. I prefer sunset and sundown. That thins things just a bit. Sometimes.

Call or visit the Sugarlands Visitor Center
near Gatlinburg. They can tell you when,
where to find various features, status of
leaf color, etc. You will have to hike to see
waterfalls except for Meigs Falls which can
be seen from Little River Road. A trip to the
visitor center will be well worth your time.
I have been to this Park several times and never
tire of going. Leaving tomorrow for there.
