Santa Rosa/Napa fires, A GOOD reason to save your archives somewhere else

As I worry about my friends who have retired to Santa Rosa, I think about the devastation this has brought to so many people. The loss of all your possessions and memories in an instant... photographs seem like such a paltry thing now, but later?

I have scanned as many old photos of family and friends that I ever get access to because you can never have enough backup.

I do keep all my files doubled up minimum and a copy off site, but never used the cloud. This is making me rethink my position about that.

Ya never know...

(I use Carbonite and really like its simplicity.)

Yes, I have my fingers crossed that I won't have to evacuate. A couple friend that live a few miles closer than me already have!!

The only problem with Carbonite is that if you delete anything from your computer, the corresponding backup will be erased in a month.

I live out where I can only use Hughes net. Carbonite was too slow for me. Just me. I am sure it is fine for others.

Carbonite users. The first backup is quite lengthy. After that carbonate will back up in real time what docs or pictures etc you create. You might consider setting your software to back up at a certain time of day when you are not using your computer. If I am not mistaken carbonite will automatically give priority to active or in use programs. One issue though is data usage. If you don't have an unlimited data plan and you pay by the gigabyte you might very well go over your monthly limit. That could get very expensive.

BTW, carbonite only backs up fies in the users directory! You can pay extra and include an external hard drive.

The only problem I had with Carbonite was that it would not save any of your financial data ie. banking or checking accounts. Everything else was fine.

Well, if I delete something, I really don't want it any more...

You mean if I have "My Pictures" on the D drive, it won't back that up?

All my camera equipment and cash that was in the safe too!!!
Hopefully go back in a day or two!

That's one reason that I keep a backup copy of everything (including software and operating system) in my bank's safe deposit vault. It's supposed to be fireproof, water proof and (theoretically) hurricane proof.

CrashPlan works for me. Backs up external drives as well.
