Headed to Lancaster, PA on a train trip out of Pittsburgh in 3 weeks. Besides colorful leaves, any suggestions for hidden gems within 50 miles of this "Amish" area?
Aside from leaves, the people, the farms, Zinn's Diner (though it is now called Park Place), Big Amos at Hershey Farm in Strasburg (Big Amos used to be outside of Zinn's but was moved after it was sold)

NYC's Park West Camera Club is again revisiting over the 3-day Columbus weekend the Pennsylvania Dutch and Lancaster County. A dozen or so members will be exploring the many covered bridges;
indoor and outdoor markets; dropping in the pretzel, chocolate and candy factories and photographing the camera-shy Amish and Mennonite people, horse-drawn buggies and farms. For a specific list
of places and things to see, see:

President James Buchanan's home is Lancaster Co. I always enjoyed eating at The Shady Maple, an Amish smorgasbord. Great food.
Not a Gem, or even worth a photo, but about 4 miles after your train leaves Paoli is Frazer Rail Yard where I worked as a Yardmaster until I retired in 2010.
If you like Wildlife photography, there Middle Creek WMA just north of Ephrata. Great place..

Thank you. That's the kind of specific information I was looking for.

Theres also Heniz NWR in Tinicum in Philly, also a marvelous place..
PA Railroad Museum in Strasburg; Ephrata Cloisters in Ephrata; Landis Valley Farm Museum on the outskirts of Lancaster. As someone else has noted, there are about 30 covered bridges in the county. The Central Market in downtown Lancaster. The Shoe House between Lancaster and York in Hallam, PA. The architecture of Downtown Lancaster itself. Just beyond your 50 mile limit, I think, but well-worth the extra few minutes is Harrisburg with the State Capital building and also the Star Barn-- Star Barn worth a trip all on its own.
My wife and I had a studio outside of Lancaster for 15 years. A favorite of our was the Lancaster Amtrak station which has a recent remodel but still very classic. Downtown Lancaster has great architecture and restaurants. If you hit the correct day the downtown Famers market is a good eating & photo op. The Strasburg RR and PA Rr museum if your into trains.
If you want to see Amish stay off Rt 30 tourist trap and travel I think it's 340 through Paradise, Bird in Hand etc. used to be a 60 year old Pro Camera shop downtown but it closed in May ๐ช I bought a lot of gear there including Nikon, Bronica, & Mamiya. Owner, a friend of mine who is a photographer cruelly went blind.
Forgot Fulton Theater is about 150 year old classic old Opera House still opened. Near the Farmers market. Suggest eating at the Dispensing Company which is also right there.
Just outside of Lititz PA which is about 7 miles up route 501 from where the station is, there's a Wolfe Preserve. Great Photo ops there. On Tuesdays there's a great Farmers Market, Flea Market between East Petersburg & Manheim. Mannheim has PA's largest Auto Auction. They sometimes have Exotics. Farmers market is called Roots Market.
One last thing, Just south of Lititz on Rt 501 is Lancaster Airport. It's a very active general aviation airport with close access. You can get great shots of small and larger planes โ๏ธ taking off & landing. You can park right near the end of the runways.
Great running steam engines at Strasburg and at a local crossing you'll usually catch Amish in buggies waiting for the train ๐ to pass. Image will look ๐ like it's a 100 years old. Also nearby a great model train layout the Choo Choo barn and the Toy Train Museum, plus the Caboose inn where you can sleep in 1 of about 15 old Cabeese. Many different Roads represented.
As stated by many members Lancaster has a lot of interesting things to photograph. One thing that people forget, or chose to ignore is the Amish do not like their pictures taken. Capturing their image is against their beliefs and should be respected.
Not mentioned so far Central Market in the City of Lancaster, Town of Intercourse,PA, and kitchen Kettle, tourist trap but with photo possibilities, try Rt 772 from Intercourse out to Lititz, original Sturgis Pretzel factory, get your certificate, I'll keep remembering, planning another day out there next month, shopping trip for us couple times a year, Bob.
Oh Bird -in -Hand Farmers market on Rt340 and the two stores across the street that are joined by a covered bridge inside .
