Dark Storm Clouds

Tried taking photos of very dark storm clouds using "Intelligent auto" mode as the setting. Photos didn't look as dark as seen with the "naked eye"(appeared washed out). What settings should I have used to capture the true darkness of the storm clouds. Using SONY DSC-HX 80 camera.

What works for me is to look for contrast and underexpose. Then I'll work the midtones and push the whites/black in B&W to make the image look dramatic. Here's an example.

It's all in the processing. In LR, I would move the Shadow slider to the right and the Black slider to the left, for a start.

If that transformer case on the pole isn't blown you have nothing to worry about. Hopefully the "intelligent" auto exposure kept the histogram well to the right but avoided blown highlights. If that's what happened you should have a relatively noise-free shot to work with in PP and you just need to experiment to find the best way to darken it. Start off with just lowering the Brightness/Exposure setting and take it from there.

Lower the highlights in the sky and add a bit of contrast. Pretty easy to do in
Lightroom CC...

A circular polarizer filter will help at the start.
