My Wife and I live only 11/2 hours from the Antietam Battlefield. We decided to get our Senior Lifetime Passes before the price went from $10.00 to $80.00. It will go up to $80.00 on Monday the 28th. Antietam is the closest place to get them that I know of. Gettysburg doesn't have them. We were on a time crunch but we did manage to hang around to get a couple of picture.

An interesting place to visit. I'm glad you got your passes, my wife and I have been using them for years now. The best investment we have ever made. Good photos as well. Another place not too far from here is Harpers Ferry, some really great photographs possible there.

That is such a beautiful place. Hard to imagine such a battle in such a lovely setting. Nicely done.

Glad you got your pass. I have had one for awhile, but I opted to actually purchase another one (I lose things!).

Your second shot is beautifully composed and an all around well done landscape!

Thank you. We are considering Harper's Ferry and also Thomas Jefferson's Home.

The shot with the bridge would be so beautiful with the fall colors coming up.

I agree. I'll have to keep that in mind.

Very nice. And congratulations on getting your Senior Pass. On my 62nd birthday, I drove to Great Falls National Park in Virginia (the closest national park to me), waited in the car line until I reached the ranger entrance. I presented my driver's license, gave the ranger $10, then turned around and headed home (I didn't have time to stay at the park). :)

You've also reminded me of the quirky way that the north and south named battles of the Civil War: The north tended to name them after bodies of water and the south tended to name them after nearby towns and communities (and railroad junctions). Thus your reference to Antietam is the northern name, referring to the creek that ran nearby. The south called it Sharpsburg, after the town. It was the first battle fought in northern territory, and still remains the bloodiest single-day battle in American history, with some 22,000 casualties.

I used to be a Civil War buff...

Thanks for the photos and the memories.

I too used to be a Civil War buff. You are right about the way the North and South named battles. Gettysburg is the battlefield closest to me and is the one I'm most familiar with. Thanks for looking.

Remember that it was a one day battle. Hugh losses for both sides. Bloodiest single day battle in American history, all Americans 23,000...

You are correct. Antietam was the bloodiest single day battle and Gettysburg, the bloodiest battle with 51,000 casualties over 3 days. Can't imagine the carnage.

Very nice shots. I once spent sunrise on the battlefield on the anniversary of the battle. Misty, moody, spooky shots. Living so close, you should experience the same some misty morn.
