I'm looking at the Canon 5Dm4. Any advise on where to but it, and should it be new?

B&H Photo Video is a great place to buy.I have bought many items with no problems. If you can afford it buy new.

Where to buy falls into the most likely and trusted places to purchase camera equipment, Adorama, B&H, last but not least Amazon. Day in day out these three stores will more than likely have prices that are identical

There is a limit to how much a genuine retailer can reduce the price of an item before it becomes dodgy.

There is that old saying, "If it sounds to good to be true"?

I think you will have a fair deal with Adorama or B&H.

Price is pretty much set for authorized dealers. But they can sometimes throw in extra goodies. When I bought my 7DII the local store gave me the current Canon Store sale price and threw in a third party battery grip (which has worked perfectly for over 2 years now).

The Canon direct on-line store has the 5DIV body only at $200 discount = $3299.00* and in their refurbished** section they have the body for $2799.20.

*they also have several bundles with different lenses and one with the 24-105L mk II and a Pro-100 printer and 50 pack of Pro-Luster 13x19 paper.
**same factory warranty as new.

There's a fine line between what the dealer sells the camera for as opposed to what they advertise. Canon sets a MAP (minimum advertised price), but the retailer may and occasionally does sell for less.

Buying: Adorama, Amazon, B&H, Cameta, Costco, Crutchfield, Hunt’s, Robert’s

Used and refurbished are legitimate considerations. I'd prefer refurbished over used. If a dealer is selling at a low price, ignore it. Buy at the standard price form an authorized dealer.

Big "on line" retailers are nice but find a local retailer get to know them shop where you have a face to deal with if your "stuck" you'll have a friend to help you
Little known fact the manufacturer sets list price and retailers can't deviate from that

The camera companies dictate the price. You can look for used or open box. Try B&H, Adorama, KEH, Cameta camera etc ask here for recommendations.

I agree, I purchased a refurb 5D lll from Cametta, never a problem and a very fine camera. If you want to buy new B&H is a safe bet, but wait for Canon rebates to soften price. The best of luck!

Buy: B&H Video. Samy's Camera. Adorama. Amazon.com.

Condition: New, refurbished, or used.

Suggestion: Rent this camera to try it before you buy it.

Note: Some here will ask you what kind of photography you intend to do with this camera.

They may ask your skill level, too.

In addition, they may inquire which lens or lenses you now own which will mount on this camera.

All good questions because they may steer you in the best direction for doing your photography.

Finally, this review of the Canon 5D IV may help you decide: http://www.kenrockwell.com/canon/5d-mk-iv.htm

Good luck.

If you have a local camera store check it out. The price won't be higher than reputable online dealers like B&H but you have to pay sales tax (legally you still have to pay sales tax buying online). When I bought my camera 3.5 years ago my local store price was actually $17 less than B&H price but I do have to pay $250 for the sales tax. To me it's worth it to support the local stores. At the very least they let me actually handle the camera before I buy. I really hate buying things sight unseen. For a camera like my Nikon Df, it's difficult to actually see it before buying it as big box stores don't have them in store for you to check it out. They would order it for you though but that's not the same.

The only thing that you have to watch with small local shops is that they sometimes have their own agenda. I went in looking at Canon bodies at one shop and one day they salesperson tried to talk me into a Nikon and a couple weeks later another salesperson tried to tell me I would be crazy to even think about going to a Nikon. Some shops try to push what they make the most money on too. And if you are looking at the high end cameras sometimes the shops don't even carry that model due to low possibility of sales. Decide what you want and need and get it from B&H is my recommendation if you want to purchase new. Canon refurbished if otherwise.

Best,
Todd Ferguson
