Trying to capture a quick bird with a 1000 mm lens.

These are pictures of Bushtits. They are certainly very common in the Southern California area but are frustrating to photograph. They are very quick, live in sage/mesquite areas, and feed deep within the bushes.
These were taken at a range of approximately 15 feet, have been cropped very little (about 5%) and were brought up 1/3-2/3 stop in DPP.
Often I am asked about a long lens and that I must be taking pictures of birds very far away. Certainly that does happen, but I usually use a longer lens to fill up the frame with smaller birds that are much closer. These were taken with a Canon 5D4 with a 500 mm IS II lens and a 2x Teleconvertor III making the lens 1000 mm on a full frame camera. A flash was used at FEC 0, EC 0.
The first two were taken at 1/200, 13, ISO 100. The last one was taken at 1/200, 10, ISO 400.

Very good. The third one looks aggressive.

Thank you. Although the 3rd picture does have an "Angry Bird" look, these birds are about as non aggressive as birds can be. I am not sure what he/she was thinking.

Thank you. Although a very common and somewhat drab bird, they do strike great poses. The trick is just being in position to capture them in those poses.
