Butterfly looks like it may be a Pearl Crescent and yes gray one is a moth, no idea which one however.

The butterfly was tough to get because as he fed he kept his wings closed. When he opened them it was a short quick flip and in a flash they were closed again. I took a lot of shots LOL.
Plus he was a younger, smaller one so it was even quicker than the adults I have since seen.

Rule of thumb, moths rest with their wings flat, butterflies hold them folded.

The 2nd picture is a moth in the family Geometridae. The caterpillars of these moths are 'inchworms'. There are a lot of species that closely resemble this one, and one is: Ectropis crepuscularia.
