Nikon D5300 on a Harley
I'm riding my Harley cruiser from NC to RI. All I have for storage are two leather saddle bags and a canvas pack that attaches to the sissy bar and rests on the passenger pillion. Is it a bad idea to pack the D5300 and 3 lenses in the canvas pack? I'm worried that the camera and lenses won't stand up to the vibration and heat from the summer sun on a 12 hour ride.
Thanks,
Bob

Some years back I carried a D100 on a three week 7200 mile ride during a heat wave in July in the
trunk of a black Honda Goldwing. I would make sure that the equipment is well padded and the bag was waterproofed.

I have a Honda Goldwing and the camera equipment goes into the camera bag and the camera bag goes into my top case. The longest trip was from Fayetteville, NC to Maine. Never had any issues. Have a great trip!!!
Thanks JR45 and luvmypets. Each individual piece will be sealed in a zip lock bag and resting on my clean clothes. Everything that goes into the pack will be in a contractor trash bag that will be doubled over at the top so if any water gets into the pack it will run off the trash bag and not into it.

Yes, vibration! I'd wrap it in bubble wrap. Nikons withstand the tremendous vibration of being shot into space, so your camera should be able to make it to RI.
When I had my last HD, I bought a padded thermally insulated lunch container and put my camera and lenses in there. I didn't have to worry about heat (AZ) or wrapping it in clothes. That way also I could pull the camera out easily to take a shot or go to the hotel room.
If this is what you think, then don't take the camera and lenses with you.

Thank you very much for your cogent reply. I always appreciate hearing of other peoples experiences so I can make an informed decision.
I have ridden CA to DC and back a number of times, with one trek lasting 31 days. All of this on a Softail Custom, rigid motor. Saddle bag, no special measures...a small towel to minimize handling scuffs.
No worries...ride safe, but ride fast and take chances!!!
Just to make you aware a D5300 is not a D100 or any other well built Nikon camera. What won't irritate a professional model, may shake your camera apart. The same will go for kit lenses if that is what you have. I would consult Nikon and ask them how to pack them for a Harley. I would not be surprised if they tell you not to do it.
Again, lotta miles on an HD with D40, D90, and D7100s....not an issue! (see my post above...can't argue much with 20K plus miles!)
Will Nikon not rec.??? Hell yeah! Nikon, Canon, any of them won't commit to anything but kid gloves!
Shiny side up, Rubber side down and bubble wrap around the camera and lens.
And in farm country watch for gravel on the corners kicked up by farmers tractors. Gravel was my only downfall, literally!!
I'm in the eclipse path, and pity the bikers dodging the RVs. At least most of them have rear cameras and can see what they are backing over!?!
as it is a Harley perhaps you ought to think about vibration proofing other vital equipment ?
remenbre to line your panties with bubble wrap
