What is the difference (besides the price EL15 @ $49 vs. EL15A @ $59) between the Nikon EN-EL15 and the Nikon EN-EL15A? I'm going to Iceland at the end of September and looking to buy a couple of spare Nikon batteries for my wife and I.

The en-el15a is a new battery designed for the new Nikon d7500. I think it will work in some cameras other that the d7500, but you would need to check. They claim that the battery does not "train" when charging. Meaning that if you consistently charge at 50%, the battery will not train to need a charge at 50%. It is also supposed to have a longer life in cold weather, but I would opt for a couple extra normal batteries rather than invest in the new battery, at least until it has been out for a while and has had the chance to prove itself. I believe those are the only basic differences, so I will be sticking with the en-el15. Hopefully this helped somewhat and have fun in Iceland.

I have purchased batteries on Amazon and they have worked well for me and my D810 and they are half that price.

My family and I are going to Iceland in November let us know how it went. It seems there are a number of Hoggers going or have been there. There are some great photos here on the forum this week from there...

Someone posted a few weeks ago about the A model not fitting into his camera, although it should work with cameras using the non-A version. It's an improved battery for $10. If it's worth the cost, go for it.

I just visited NikonUSA's website and did a spec and compatibility comparison. It appears that the EN-EL15a is an improved version of this form factor that has improved low temperature performance. It also appears that there are two models designed for the EN-EL15 battery that are not compatible with the "a" revision...the D600 and the Nikon1 V1. There is no explanation of this that I can find. Don't know if this is an oversight or that are truly incompatible. It would be interesting to know if any members have concrete experience around this.

I reviewed the specs of both batteries and the only difference I noticed was the older EN-EL15 weighs more. The owners manual for the D850 does not mention the older battery and I will be calling Nikon before I slip the older version into my D850.

What did you find out from Nikon? I just got my D850 and the store sold me a EN-EL15 but the camera came with the A series. Thanks.

Sorry, I must have posted the answer on another thread. Yes, the EN-EL15 can be used in the D850. It is also listed in the owner's manual on page 296 "Other Accessories".

Look out if you own a D500, aftermarket batteries won't work, has to be original equipment EN-EL15. Third party batteries work fine in my D7200, D500 rejects anything but the real deal.

You piqued my interest (as both of my bodies employ this battery) and I found this:

Nikon updated the design of the original EN-EL15 due to overheating issues. They issued a voluntary recall of some of the manufactured lots of EN-EL15 batteries, and stopped producing the non-"a" versions.

I remember checking my batteries' lot numbers to see if I was affected. I wasn't, and I further believe the "A" models work fine in any camera needing the EN-EL15 form factor.
