I went out today to practice for the eclipse please give feedback on the shot (can this be improved). Taken with the Nikon D500, 80-400mm lens at 400mm and a Marumi Solar Eclipse Filter 77mm screw in (all it is, is a ND 10 filter) f40, ISO-100 and 1/100 sec. Note the sun spot on the upper right of the sun.

I'm going to only get a partial eclipse where I'm at. I also have a D500 with a Tamron 18x400 that I will be using. I am going to practice this weekend. Your shot gives me an idea of where to start with my settings. Did you try to crop this to a larger shot? If so, how was it?

No I only cropped to fit 11X8.5 keeping the sun centered, I was afraid that If I went larger on the Sun I would introduce noise. I tried different aperture settings, but found that f32 and f40 at 1/100 sec and ISO-100 worked the best. I could vary the shutter speed instead of the aperture, but I found having the camera at an extreme angle mounted on a tripod fully extended did not give me access to the top of the camera I used the articulated screen and an trigger release so I wouldn't shake the camera.

Looks to me like you've got focus and exposure pretty well nailed.
Good luck and have fun, looking forward to pics.

i did same thing with a 400mm older tokina , cropped it to almost fill the frame , no noise , also i did some pictures in BW , the spot is very visible when you crop , was shooting at iso 1000 , f8 , 1/200sec .using a film in a sheet form made for this .tried with a 800 older nikon nikkor , the tokina does same or better , much lighter / smaller .with a older D300 NIK .

I didn't think ND filters filterd correctly?

It is an ND filter with a transmission value of 1/100,000 which is standard https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1299067-REG/marumi_amdn01on_77mm_solar_eclipse_filter.html . This filter provides more of a sodium view than the actual yellow solar scopes.

I was thinking ND10(which you said), and would not be near enough. I forgot to add the 10 in my response. Thank you for the clarification of ND 100000

It is a 10 stop optical glass filter (basically the same) the package that the filter came in tells you not to use the optical view finder with the filter use live view.
