I have decided that I need a new tripod. The one I have was my dad's from his days of portrait and wedding photography. Probably purchased around 1963. I have never used a tripod much except for time exposures but now at my advancing age (66) I am finding hand held to be a little challenging some days. Definitely not all of the time, but there are times when a tripod would be a smart addition. I have shopped B&H and Adorama and quickly became overwhelmed with all of the choices. I don't do video and I am on a fixed income so I'm looking for something under $200.00 all included. Suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I would be mounting a Canon 7D on it. No extremely heavy lenses at this time. I would be carrying it around with me from time to time. Thank you.

If you have a 7d and it could be possible to get a bigger lens in the future you had better look at something with the upper diameter of the legs being at 37mm or bigger. The 37mm will do just fine even with a 150-600mm Sigma Sport lens which is pretty darn heavy but not as heavy as an 800mm. I'm 70 and have the 7D with the sport lens. I have the Gitzo Series 3 - 3 section Gt4533LS it's 61" tall when extended. It does not weigh over 5.5 lbs and with the top plate and your head you should be happy with it. It's better to buy once then to buy twice. If you buy something smaller you won't be satisfied. Yes, it is a bit pricy but you would have a good tripod. That is firm and steady.

I'd shop around for a used Manfrotto, SLIK or Bogen to save a few bucks.
I have two tripods I picked up inexpensively and they work as well as
a new tripod.

I bought this one from a guy who writes for imaging-resource.com. He said it was used, but it appeared brand new. I don't know what you'd think of the head, but the pod itself is a real winner. Light, sturdy, nothing binds or sticks, two center columns, weight hook, everything. Mine didn't have a head but I had heads already. This would leave enough in your budget for a head upgrade if necessary:

I wonder if a monopod would suit your needs? You could get a little more bang for your budget and it would not weight as much..

I have given a monopod some thought. It's definitely not out of the running.

I have been looking at the Slik Pro700 with the 700DX 3 way pan & tilt head. Looks like it would cover most of what I want. Only draw back might be the weight. It's a little over 7 lbs. But then again, I'm not going to be carrying it around all day.

Good choice but go for carbon fiber if you can. It's quite a revelation if you've never used one.
