Hello all! I'm not new to photography since I've always loved taking photos but am not a pro by any means. I just love taking photos of my family and occasional nature-related oddities. I stumbled upon this forum in my desperate search for answers to a problem my camera has developed within the last year. I have a Canon Rebel T5 EOS 1200D and the auto focus began acting up by going back & forth several times, well not several but MANY times sometimes never focusing at all until I turn it off and back on. It seemed to occur more with my 18-55mm lenses so I bought a new one. Still did the same thing. Returned that and spoke to a Best Buy employee who said I had the AF on the wrong setting and advised me to use the Live Mode and all my problems would be solved. Still does it. The hubs says to chuck it and buy new which I can't bring myself to do since it's no more than 5-6 yrs old & I bought a Speedlight flash as an accessory, which of course won't fit a Nikon, which my daughter has advised me to get. There are no repair shops in my area and I am at my wits end. I don't want to get rid of my camera so if anyone on this forum can help me, I would be eternally grateful!!!

I would start by cleaning the electrical connections between the lens and the camera body. Check for any debris or obvious damage. Rub each contact lightly with a pencil eraser. Clean with alcohol and dry.
Put all back together and place on a tripod. With no movement of camera or subject see if it's still seeking focus. If so then time for the dreaded Repair Center. Will be expensive if not in warranty.
Welcome. Good luck with your camera.
I don't feel confident attempting any cleaning since I have exhaustively read and did see the pencil eraser mentioned but it was cautioned due to debris being left behind from that process. I certainly appreciate your feedback and may research that more to gain some confidence to give it a try before I chuck it.
Welcome! Looking forward to your posts and pictures. Happy shooting!

Welcome & Enjoy. Allan from Pikesville.
Welcome, and make yourself at home.
Hello and welcome from Elkton! I would do the eraser/alcohol clean. Canned air or air brush will take away any debris.
