Thank you Nightski! I have been playing around with different crops and putting the bird on the thirds and I do like it - I just need to decide what I like the best.

Yes! It's your vision of it that counts.

A simple, beautiful interpretation of a very common sight. I very much like the vertical composition, but like Sandra, would prefer the bird at the upper third position. If it were mine I would also crop in the sides, after cropping the top, to regain the current format. Then I would print it large and hang it in my gallery of sea bird photos.

Going through some pictures from my recent trip home, I came across this shot of a gull and have become drawn to it. I love the blues of the water and the slight refection of the bird. I would love your honest critiques.

This is a great tale of rapid evolution of impact on (This) viewer.
Within the first two seconds of seeing this Image I went from: "Now why would anyone take..." to "Oh...Wow!"
The elegant angular discrepancy of the gull's wings with the average levels of the water's reflections is what makes this image for me. "Mesmerizing" was mentioned and is more than adequate for describing the efffect on me!

A common sight...but a unique image!

edit:
As regards the reflection below of the gull of itself from the water's surface, to my eye it contributes to perception of the depth of the image, given the angle at which the gull's reflection bounces from the water to the eye. It took a few moments of "reflection" to realize that it contributed to my awareness of the depth of the image. Thus, I suggest that the gull's reflection, rather than being a distraction, is an essential component of the composition..

Congrats!

Dave
