Nikon 105mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S VR Lens
Is this a good macro lens? I never really understand what all the letters mean.
Thanks

All others are judged by that one.

G = "Gelded" (no aperture ring)
ED - Extra Low Dispersion glass (better coatings and less color aberrations)
IF - Internal focus (the front piece of glass doesn't rotate when focussing)
AF-S - The lens contains a focus motor (AF=Auto focus, S~Silent wave motor)
VR - Vibration reduction (helps eliminate the jitters when you hand hold)

Here's a link to the lens tech code salad:

Charlie has it right. His comment means that the Nikkor 105-mm macro is the lens to which all other macro lenses are compared.

At 2x and greater magnification, the Canon 65-mm is extremely difficult to use: DoF is miniscule, focus is critical, camera movement is highly probable at slower shutter durations, etc. I laud honor to any photographer who mastered this lens. And the cost? WOW!
