Excellent shots.

Thank you. One of the reasons I made the change from Version I to Version II is weight. We do some traveling, mostly by air, and weight is always a concern. We are planning on coming to the UK next summer, our first trip to Europe, so I will PM you later to find out any photo/bird spots you might suggest.

Nice. Just goes to show that a 2X TC can be a practical accessory.

Yes, I agree. I had intended on using my 1.4X but picked up the 2X by mistake. In retrospect, I am glad that I did.

I have heard lots use that lens off a tripod with extenders. Will be curious whether you give that a try and how you feel about it. Congratulations on you new purchase and great hummer shots.

Just received a used Canon 500mm F/4 IS II lens. I attached it to a Canon 2X III Extender and a Canon 5D IV camera. Mounted everything on a Gitzo tripod and a Mongoose head. Birds were about 30' away. I cropped the shots about 40%. Shot with full zone AF at 1/1600 sec. and F/8.
I was impressed with how quickly the lens acquired focus on moving hummingbirds even at F/8 (because of the extender). These are either Rufous or Allen's Hummingbirds (cannot tell difference without actual feather measurements.

Nice shots, did you do a MA on this set-up or is this straight out of the box?

I am not sure how long I could hand hold this outfit. The tripod and gimbal head is so light (compared to my old one) that I do not see myself hand holding very much.

Yes I did MA the lens. I use LensAlign. With only the 500 on the 5D IV the MA is -1; probably insignificant. With the 1.4XT it is +2; again, probably insignificant. But with the 2x the MA is +11. I think that would affect the focus accuracy significantly.

Thank you. For the first time in the field with this combo, I am happy.
