I'm going to be in Colorado next week and I need advice on
"Must See" areas. I am going to be in the Denver area
I will be taking a D-500, And lenses from 10 MM to 500MM.
Initially going through Trail Ridge Road at the Rocky Mountain National Park,
Then through Leadville , Twin Lakes, Independence Pass, then through Aspen
At some point I would like to see Royal Gorge..
What am I missing ??
Please help,
Larry

If you like music, check out who's playing at Red Rocks in Morrison -- great acoustics and a gorgeous venue, especially with an evening concert with a setting sun.

You must know that Maroon Bells is near Aspen. If you keep going west on I70 to the Grand Junction area, you will be near Colorado National Monument.

Your best bet is to go online, Google or Bing, enter "must see in Denver CO area"; you will get thousands of useful results.
If you're in Morrison, say hello to my cousin Tanya. Funny story short; her last name was Morrison, she married a guy whose last name is Morrison, and they live in Morrison Colorado.

I stayed in Durango once and took the San Juan skyway to Silverton and Ouray. There's a steam locomotive pulling passenger cars that runs between Durango and Silverton. In Silverton, they've keep everything as it was in the 1800's. Silverton and Ouray have got to be some of the coolest towns in the US. The San Juan skyway is scary in places. There are steep, high drop-offs and just a few guardrails. I had to stop a few times to get my wits about me. The reason they have hardly any guardrails is so the snowplows can push snow over the edge during the winter. It's very scenic.

Try and go to Mount Evans, it's about 1/2 hour from Denver. It's the highest paved road in the US. The view is spectacular!

Don't go to to Maroon Bells on the weekend and be ready for a crowd almost anytime you go. It's beautiful to photograph and that draws many photographers. Time of day is very important for good photos and, of course, all photographers know that.

Keep closer to Denver and ride the Georgetown Loop, a steam railroad built around a spectacular bridge.

Durango is six hours from Denver. If the goal is to ride behind steam through the mountains, the Cumbres&Toltec, which is another remnant of the same system as the Durango train, leaves from Antonio, which is "just" four hours from Denver.

Boulder is just up the road and offers photo ops. Also, Red Rock Amphitheater is on the way.

You can go to hanging lake off of I-70 in Glenwood Canyon about a Three hour drive West of Denver. You could also go to Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs, about an hour south of Denver, the Air Force Academy is there also. If you want to go further south than that, the Great Sand Dunes are in Alamosa. If you're into American History, Bents Old Fort is in La Junta, there is also a Japanese internment camps in that same general area as the fort.

If you go to Boulder, the drive to Nederland is through a scenic canyon. You can stop at Nederland for lunch and then do the return drive. The dam at Nederland is worth seeing, too. The water behind the dam is 700' deep right beside the road. I always wondered what happened to cars that veered off the road and into the water. Needless to say I kept my eyes on the road until I got to the other side of the dam.
