Hi all - Usually when I go on vacation, I take my D7200, a telephoto , a wide angle, some prime lenses, flash, monopod, charger, extra batteries for camera and flash & enough SD cards to film the uncut version of" Titanic". After being told by my orthopedist that either I lighten the load or look to getting a back brace in the not too distant future, I decided to follow the KISS principle. So hear goes:
- Camera: D7200
- Lenses: Tamron 10-24 mm; Tamron 18-270mm (hey, I like the lenses and they do an admirable job at a fraction of the cost of a Nikon lens)
- Flash: SB700 + diffusers that came with the flash.
- Charger: aftermarket USB chargers for both EL-EN15 and AAs (can be fed from my cellphone charger)
- Cards: Using both slots in the D7200 for 64gb cards- 1 video, one stills. +2 extra jic
- Monopod: still deciding. May just put the camera on top of my wife's head (I'm 6'2". She is 5'1". It's a perfect fit)
- Carry bag : Lowepro Toploader Pro AW75 (everything fits!)
* Total wgt: ~ 10lbs
Yes, I am having withdrawal symptoms leaving my roller bag at home but you learn to compromise after a while.

Way too much to take on a Caribbean cruise....camera, charger, 18-270 lens, filters, and bag. Better yet a simple p/s unless you are going somewhere that is once in a lifetime experience and you want professional pics
Enjoy the cruise

My cruise package has been reduced to my (almost new, bought it on my last cruise) Canon SX60 HS, chargers, flash, cleaning stuff, a card for each day and a Dell notebook (for backup), all in one bag ...

I think Bob S is right, and depending on the size and weight of the Dell notebook I might use a small iPad or tablet for backup instead. Take care of your back - it needs to last a lifetime.

I'm a Canon shooter and I have two camera bodies: SL1 and 70D and when I travel out town I only take the SL1. The SL1 is very light and can use EF and EF-S lenses. For traveling light and getting good if not great pictures this the camera for me.

I took a 17 days train trip and carried my camera and the following lenses: 18-135, 50, 40, 55-250 and 10-18. I would say that 98% of my pictures were taken with the 18-135mm. And the other 2% of the pictures taken was because those lenses were in my bag and not that I needed them. I would say take your 18-270 and a small external flash, I did not want to use the on camera flash.

My wife & I have been to the islands twice now.
What I took with us was my Sony a99 and a Tamron 28-300mm + a Sigma 12-24mm Wide Angle.
I also took two small pouches. One with Polarizer and one with SD chips.
Of course I also brought two camera Battery Chargers which stayed on the ship.
We both took about 3,000 pictures with our 2 a99's.

I just returned from an 11 day cruise to Aruba, Barbados, Martinique, St Kitts and Tortolla. I took my D7100, 18-200mm and 35mm (the 35mm never left the bag).

Weather conditions prevented me from taking very many pictures. The strong winds along the sea shore blew up sand and salt spray that caused me wrap my camera in a towel.

There was much rain in the rain forests. Other than Aruba, the guides said they have two seasons, sunny with some rain & rainy with some sun (and they were just entering the rainy season.

also a problem that I hadn't anticipated was taking the camera from air conditioned rooms and vehicles, out into the high humidity.

Good luck. There is some beautiful scenery!

The heat and humidity can be tough on a camera. The ships interior is very cool (first timers usually are found buying jackets and sweaters) so you camera may have lots of condensation on the lens when going out on the open deck. I usually take a point and shoot and put in a zip lock bag. The point and shoot is great for on ship pictures. I let the camera warm up before taking it out of the zip lock in the humidity. Same goes for tours and getting out of a cool bus. Be aware that most tours use very small buses or a trolly so there is little or no room for gear. I decide on the shore tours at home and then see what people say about the tour to decide on what gear to take. I do have a underwater point and shoot for snorkel trips. Monopods and tripods are not usable on a moving boat and once docked there are lots of rails on which to rest the camera.
If anything take a landscape lens for a DSLR for taking pictures of the port area from the boat once you dock.

I know that this is not in the mainstream on this forum, but I would still add at least one big lens, 400mm or larger if for no other reason than shooting the sea birds that follow the ship. But I use my Sigma 150-600 more than any other lens I own, so I know I'm not typical.

From my personal experience from both visiting and living in the Cancun/Yucatan peninsula area of the Caribbean for many years I found my "Bridge Camera" was the best way to go - less hassle, fear of lost or damage, simply got every shot I ever wanted with the many tools packed into that small camera - I moved from film to digital while living there - Puerto Morelos - half way between Cancun &
playa del carmen- now back here in CA I have a large kit of Canon Rebels and lens. A car/cigarette lighter charger is really a life saver.

Sounds like a good job of paring down the equipment. Take the monopod along - women do not like their hair messed up - could be dangerous for you otherwise.

Put it off for as long as you can, but at some time in the future you may want to go mirrorless. 4/3rds will save your back and legs the most weight, but who knows what will be available by then in Nikon APS-C mirrorless. If you should decide sooner than later, you might want to contact UHH burkphoto. Since you indicate you do video, he could tell you all the ins and outs of the new GH5. It's a killer of a camera for both stills and video with special emphasis on the video.
