The Canon 400mm f/5.6 is the first L series lens I purchased. ... If you are thinking about getting the Canon 100-400mm L II, I'd say go for it. It's really a nice birding lens, and I am quite certain you would love it. Both the above mentioned lenses are excellent...both are tack sharp. The zoom lens is twice the cost of the prime lens, and heavier, but definitely more versatile in various situations. If you are trying to choose between the two, and the cost is not a problem, then go with the 100-400. That's just my opinion.

Thanks so much for the detailed reply Lame-Duck. Certainly gives me more to think about before making a decision.

I like the affect, but for me, the first two are way too tight in the frame. The last one is nothing more than spectacular.

Nalu...I really thank you for your honest critique. I'll be thinking about what you said the next time I crop images of birds in flight. I'm very happy that you enjoyed the last shot...it's definitely my favorite.

My pleasure, MikWar. I'd be interested to know what lens you end up going with.

I played around with some of my snowy egret images, and since the background was already pretty dark, I just made it black to see if I could create a bit of a dramatic effect. I hope you like them. I'd like your opinions, yes or no. Thanks

A bit of a spat.

Thank you very much Sue. I was trying to create a stark contrast to the white birds and hoping to get kind of a dramatic effect with the black background.
