CrashPlan Cloud Backup Report

I finally bought into a cloud backup plan: CrashPlan. It started backing up my 2.5 TB on 5/12/17, and finished today, 6/29/17, about 48 days later. About 52 mb each day, if I got my math right (always questionable). My iMac (mid 2011) is plugged directly into a Comcast cable, which gave moderate to slow upload speeds, I'd guess; range was about 300 bps to 5.6 Mbps.

Are you pleased with the results so far? Are you comfortable with the cost? Is there any way you can test your ability to retrieve backed up data?

Most of the cloud backup companies limit the upload quantity per day. That might have been what you were seeing.

That's one of the reasons I went with backblaze. No limit.

I had the same experience with Carbonite. The upload took forever. I back up all my important stuff to an external drive but I felt more comfortable backing everything up to the cloud just in case the house burns down or someone steals my PC and external drive.

One reason that your upload took so long is that most internet providers give you a high transfer rate for downloads, but the upload rate is much, much slower. That might contribute to the glacial time it took to upload your stuff. I have Frontier FIOS and the 50 Mb connection speed applies to both uploads and downloads. I had to conclude that Carbonite throttles the uploads. But it is very frustrating to monitor the initial uploads and praying that your hard disk doesn't fail before the upload completes.

It all depends on the size of your initial transfer, The larger it is the longer it takes. But it is worth it. My Internal D drive failed and BackBlaze https://secure.backblaze.com/r/010sos restored all my files

Did you notice any slow-down in the computer while the data was uploading for that long period of time?

Jerry, I went with BackBlaze also and it took a little over a month to upload going 24 hours a day. While it was uploading I never noticed any slow down in operation. In fact I kept check on it to make sure it had not stopped uploading.

Nothing I noticed Jerry, but you do have to realize you're dealing with a limited tool when you rely on my noticing.

1) Actually, I rather expected it to take quite a bit longer to upload 2.5 TB, so yes I am pleased so far. 2) The cost struck me as quite moderate, about $60 annually for as much as I have - i.e., absolutely unlimited - but cost is such a subjective thing. 3) Sure, I could test retrieval, but I'm not inclined to bother, inasmuch as I trust the several reviews I read.

David, how much did you get backed up over that month plus?

I use CrashPlan, be sure to keep your external hardrive ALWAYS connected because if CrashPlan doesn't see it, it will remove that part of your backup and you'll have to start all over when you reconnect the drive.

If you need that information for a comparison, it is really difficult to compare. I did over 17,000 files, of which about 15,000 were photos. Now what percentage of those were RAW and what percentage were jpg. I really am not sure. So your results could vary.
