I think your photos would look better if you had all of the spider's legs in the photo (instead of one cut off) and all of the grasshopper's antenna (the one cut off)...just thought I'd comment.

On second look, the grasshopper looks fine, but the spider needs all of his cut-off leg!

Thanks for the input, I was gonna reattach it but couldn't find a suture small enough ;-)

and went back and looked at the original and the leg was a wee bit short in the shot too, and I agree I should have had the whole thing

This is an invasive species called Brown marmorated stink bug (Halyomorpha halys). In California, it has become quite a pest to agriculture.
