Street lens recommendation for Sony a6000

I decided the Sony a6000 would meet my needs for a decent, mirrorless body for street photography. I got it as a kit with the 16–50 zoom lens. My intention was to keep the kit lens around just in case I wanted something lighter than my DSLRs, and thought I would add the pancake 20mm f/2.8 as my primary street lens. Having done some subsequent research, it sounds to me like the optical performance of the pancake lens is not worth the price of admission.

Of course, I still have my 16–50 kit lens I can use, but I'd be interested in recommendations for your ideal street lens for Sony mirrorless bodies.

Thanks!

My recommendation is the same as your last thread, Sigma 19, 30 and 60mm 2.8's .......forget the Sony 20mm !

What have you found wrong with your 16-50 lens?

The 16-50mm is the perfect lens. Not unless you want to carry around another lens. The 55-210mm. You have to consider the crop sensor on both. A friend has both of these lenses for his a6000. His only lenses for this camera body.

Yes, there was so much information about cameras to sort through in the last thread, I forgot about your lens recommendations. Thank you!

So far nothing, but I've only had it a day and have only taken a few shots to get used to things. I'll tell you my preferences/concerns with the 16-50:

It's a little bigger than ideal (to me) for street use;

I find it beneficial to work within the limits of a prime lens--yes, I could keep my hands off the zoom ring, but in real life I've given in to temptation (only once, of course, but it could happen again 😜);

Finally, my experience with kit lenses has been that they are very serviceable but never ideal. When I bought my daughter her first Nikon D-3000-something, I thought the 18-55 was a good lens for a kit lens, but it certainly didn't make me want to run out and buy one. I think I'll feel the same about the 16-50 (I could find out I'm wrong), but my guess is I'll want more contrast and sharpness.

Thanks!

Sigma 30mm 2.8 or Sony FE 28-70mm

I've done some research, and you've hit the nail on the head. Not sure I'll need the 60, but the 19 & 30 are just the ticket. Thank you.

I've been using the Sony 35mm 1.8 on my A6300. I think it's a great lens for street but sometimes wish I had something a bit wider. I haven't been happy with the kit zooms. The Sony Zeiss 24 mm 1.8 is very pricey but I dream about it.

I got a Tamron 16-200mm, so I'm selling the Sony 55-210mm. The Tamron has greater coverage and good quality. It's almost 4" long, though, so it's not exactly stealth.

If anybody wants a 'one lens solution' for the A6000 it should be the Sony 18-105 f4.0 OSS G. The range is wonderful, IQ is great and price is reasonable for what you are getting. However, small and discrete it is not.
I bought the Sigma 19mm, but was not impressed so I returned it. It was one of the few things I have ever returned. There was nothing wrong with it, but I just wasn't WOWed by it and felt it wasn't significantly better then the 16-50 kit. I saved for another while and bought a used Zeiss 24mm f1.8. That is a beautiful lens. Great color, sharpness and contrast and sits very nicely on the A6000. I think you would love using it.

I sold my A6000 & kit lenses and bought the Sony 10-18 f4 & 18-70 f4. Love both the lenses. I also upgraded the camera to the Sony A6500. While I am not ready to give up my Nikons, I find myself using the Sony more and more.

i agree. It is the only lens I use on my new a6500. It is so sharp that at 105, I can crop to get what I want at under 200 yards.

A little pricey! Another vote for the Sony 18-105 which is my only lens and $1,100 less than the above with great IQ.
