Purchasing Photo Editing Software

Is there any advantage to purchasing PE software directly from the publisher vs on-line from someone else? I am thinking of purchasing Corel's PSPX9 Ultimate. I have the trial version and am very happy with it so far and FYI currently I'm only shooting JPEG. When I click on "Buy now" it takes me to Corel's website and wants to charge $79.99 which is 2X what it goes for from other discount on-line sellers. Amazon gets $49.99. Makes me wonder why I would pay 2X the price just for the privilege of buying directly from Corel. Is there something I get extra from Corel like maybe better support? Any advice here is appreciated. Thank you.

Corel and others have apparently been willing to sell their software at a variety of price points without requiring that all vendors who sell their products follow strict contractual agreements. More powerful vendors, such as Adobe, have been able to establish and enforce contractual price levels. I stopped reading anything into software (and hardware) prices long ago. I think it is better to base purchase decisions on whether a product meets my needs and offers quick access to customer service for those times when it does not. /Ralph

You often get a better deal with independent retailers due to their purchasing power.
You will receive the same support from Corel, so it makes sense to purchase from
Amazon and save yourself some money.

Manufacturers (I'm not talking about cameras) often sell their products at higher (List) prices so as not to compete with their dealers. If it's the same product, look for the lowest price - from a reliable dealer.

Norton is notorious about doing this. If you purchase their yearly update it's at their highest price so I always try to find it at Amazon or Costco, much cheaper.

I've been a Photo Shop user since version 1 up to CC 2017. Downloaded Affinity Photo and BOOM! What a great and powerful product for the money. I canceled my monthly subscription of PS and I'm totally satisfied with Affinity Photo.

I suggest downloading the 30 day trial and see for yourself.

If you have a ton of plugins, and used them extensively, you may not want this software. I had a ton of plugins and still opted to cancel PS.

Give it a try. You wont be sorry. By the way, their tutorials are 2nd to none. Even a novice can be up and running in no time. Experts in PS will enjoy this immediately.

PS I mown PS version 6 and kept it on my PC just for the plugins. Haven't used it once but it's available for me if I wish to.

I know this is not addressing your question, but depending on how attached you are to PSP, you might consider Affinity Photo which is selling for $50. I have both and preferr AP but it might have a longer learning curve. But to your question there is no dissadvantage from buing from a retail vedor, same product same support.

I hate to admit it but I just did the same thing. I also think I'll be using Topaz studio as well.

You can purchase it from anywhere, but if different source than the trial, remove the trial before you install the purchased copy. I rather suspect you'll be asked to establish an Adobe ID (which is nothing more than your email address) and a password. That would open some doors to available free training.
Good luck!

Thank you all for the response. I think I will take the advice of Wayne, Rudy and DVZ and give Affinity a try also. Again thank you all. Happy Imaging!

Ralph, purchasing from a retailer, mfg., or online retailer will get you the same product. Personally to keep costs down, since I do photography as a hobby is all, I have found my software normally online and purchased the product that is one or two updates older. Most of the time there aren't huge differences with newer versions just a few minor things that change but you can purchase the software a lot cheaper and if you like it then upgrade if you have to have newest software. The last one that I purchased was Adobe Photoshop Elements version 12 and paid 89 cents for it. It does a great job. Just an idea for you if you are trying to keep costs down and are just doing it for you enjoyment.

Manufacturers often charge full retail as they usually have non compete agreements with their dealer network so that their dealers compete against each other and not the manufacturer.

Unfortunately I trashed the email sent to me by Corel but they had a pre-father's day sale that said PSP X9 Ultimate was going for $49.99. All I could find now was their "special deals" that say $79.99 (Upgrade for $69.99). http://www.corel.com/en/special-offers/.

As for the difference you asked about, as long as it's from a reputable dealer, not a bit of difference.

After looking at Affinity I think I like the UI for PSP better. It seems a lot simpler. Simple is as simple does! Thanks again for the information/responses.
