If you insist on a big, heavy rig, a bag with a shoulder strap, with a top & Front zipper opening. Myself, I carry a light Wt. " Point & Shoot," in my jacket pocket. ( or pants pocket ) BB

I just got back from a vacation and need a better way to carry my D500 with the 18 to 300 mm lens. The neck strap is not comfortable and walking around holding the camera all day got tiresome.
I want the camera handy at all times. Except when the trails get steep or slippery.

Get one of these:

And a bunch of batteries. Hmm. . . maybe a harness or strap is a more efficient solution.

I have a camera scope pack by Better Birders of Seattle for my 500mm canon but I imagine there are smaller ones. It is perfect and leaves my arms free
on ebay https://picclick.com/Scope-Pack-by-Better-Birder-of-Seattle-142278971035.html used for maybe $30.00

Thank you for the suggestions! The FITTEST looks like what was described. Just wonder if it is compatible with RRS?

I never have found a comfortable way to carry a combination like that except in a backpack. A sling bag might be an option though - but for some people including me the one shoulder arrangement brings on back pain when the same weight over two shoulder feels just fine

I am hiking in ther Custer and Shashone National Forest. I use a cannon camera backpack. Love it. It's on sale at B&H.

You've already stated that you don't care for the camera strap, but FWIW; here's what Dan Bailey says:
