I use an over the shoulder strap (a cheaper Chinese knock off of the Black Rapid Strap). I can carry the camera for hours on end (because I have done it) without any pain or tiredness.

I hike with a pack, plus a water bottle on each hip. Would prefer a waist-level camera bag that takes weight off my neck but doesn't impede arm swing or water bottle access. I didn't hear a suggestion that would accomplish all of these goals. Keep the ideas coming!

I always say buy the biggest and strongest tripod your wife can carry.

For most hiking, I prefer the Cotton Carrier. Keeps your hands free, camera is easily accessible, and very comfortable as it places no strain on neck, shoulders, or back. To easy to manipulate safety straps prevent the camera from accidentally being dropped Camera is held firmly in place and does not bounce as you walk.

A very big "ditto that!" I have a rain jacket that zips over the camera on the Carrier when it's raining. Looks funny but it works. They also have a holster that I use on ocassion.

I just got back from a vacation and need a better way to carry my D500 with the 18 to 300 mm lens. The neck strap is not comfortable and walking around holding the camera all day got tiresome.
I want the camera handy at all times. Except when the trails get steep or slippery.

First, you will need a shoulder harness - http://www.ebay.com/itm/401140607072?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

Then, you will need a heavy duty wide belt preferably.

Then, you will need a LARGE padded Tamrac lens case .....

The belt goes thru the belt loop on the case and around your midsection. The harness goes over your shoulders and hooks to the the "D" rings of the case to accept the vertical weight when you put the camera/lens into the case - the camera body will stick out of the top - and ready for use when you pull it out.

An Op Tech Strap, A full magazine, and one in the chamber.

You don't need a concealed carry permit!!!

For once I agree with you...but that is also why I use a camera plate. My RRS plate attaches to the tripod hole, but has a full length arca-swiss groove and two mounting slots on the end of it for my Peak Design anchor links to attach to.

Which plate do you use? I looked at the ones that will fit my camera, and did not see anything that looks like what you describe. I have been using an L-plate, and would like to be able to use it with camera carrying systems such as Cotton Carrier or Peak, but still be able to use the camera on a tripod.

I don't like straps that utilize the tripod socket and render it useless.

The M-Plate Pro will overcome that and the same plate works on both Manfrotto and Arca Swiss. It ain't going to be the perfect tool for everyone but the option is out there. https://customslr.com/products/m-plate-pro :-)

If I may suggest the Black Rapid system, I'm disabled and find this system to work the best

You can also add a tether strap to the camera/lens if you want - for safety - when you have the camera/lens out of the carry case .

I bought a "Cross-Body" style Camera Strap, very comfortable, Camera sits at my side, slides up & down very easily, quality build, safety strap. Check-out "Altura" Camera Strap, I know you will like it. I paid around $17.00.
