Substitute for Popular Photography Magazine Now Gone

I subscribed to Popular Photography Magazine for years. Its sudden end to publication surprised me, and gave me a little shock.

I still subscribe to Shutterbug Magazine and to Outdoor Photographer Magazine, yet I miss the factual and historical approach of PPM. Its feature of looking back at its files from years past gave me a feeling of nostalgia.

Can anyone here suggest a substitute to PPM or something close to it?

I subscribe to Shutterbug Magazine too. It is not as good as the now discontinued Popular Photography Magazine. What I liked about PPM was the "Camera of the Year Selection." And the articles. I occasionally sneak up on online articles that are free and quite informative sometimes. Even Shutterbug Magazine wants me to change over to digital. I refused. I pay for a magazine, I expect to get a magazine. Not the digital edition. Which is cost effective for them.

SHOCKED!!! I did not see this, or expect this.. I agree, they did great follow ups on tests and articles over the years....
Guess the digital age got them too... SAD!!!

Right. I prefer the hardcopy version of a publication like a photo magazine.

I agree---digital is NOT the same as having the magazine in hand. I have the same feeling for reading a tablet---like the feel of holding a book or magazine.... guess a sign of habit over the years.

Took two issues of the "Bug" then canceled. You know I think they are all owned by the same people. Schaub and Zimmerman had their giant hands in Pop Photo for a while, a long while. It is the end of an era!

We relate to the hard copy of a publication because we sense it also by touch, not just by our vision. It is tactile,
and it may even have an odor to it of printer's ink. The digital version presents a sterile object to all but the visual sense.

It looks like Outdoor Photography is going to be next. I just received the June copy and it is substantially small that past issues. The only magazine that I find any value in is Photo Plus, the Canon version. It is a bit expensive but is a quality magazine. Additionally, there is a Nikon version. Barnes & Noble has it. You also have the option to subscribe to it. It is published in England.

Take a look at the photo magazines out of the UK, they're excellent, certainly better than any others I've read, although Outdoor Photography Canada is pretty good as well.
I prefer "Digital Camera World," of the UK mags. In-depth articles on How-to and really well researched equipment tests as well.

I'm not surprised at all - when we moved 14 years ago, I tossed enough magazines to more than cover the sidewalk in front of our house one recycling day, and after that I largely stopped purchasing them. I guess people like me diminished the market too much.

No doubt the ownership made a business decision to quit publication. Although an understandable action, still readers like ourselves will miss this magazine for our own reasons.

Even National Newspapers like the New York Times and The Washington Post have gone digital because of the lack of newsstand sales. I get emails occasionally from both, wanting me to subscribe to their digital version. It's just not photo magazines.
