I've tried to portray the essence of the lesser known areas of Cumbria in this. The title is a crib from 1920's postcards which depict the feel of an area without an exact likeness - the abbreviated 'Near' being the get-out. Does the result appeal? Photo's taken on the walk up to visit Cathedral Cavern, should you know the area.

Dave if its appeal your after it possibly fails. Looks bleak and forbidding but true to life for the area at certain times of the year. Appeal would be more likely to entail showing the majestic beauty that's available in the area. Cannot see the Cumbrian tourist board rushing to your door to purchase this shot for their latest visitors guide, this is the side of the area the try and hide usually. The shot is absolutely true to life should anyone consider visiting this part of the world. The weather can be quite awful and the scenery can be as depressing as the lost planet on a dull overcast day with a howling bitingly cold wind.

It all comes down to intention again. You say you wanted to portray the atmosphere of the place and I suspect that you've succeeded admirably. The download is essential for being able to see the details in the bottom right corner (but only just), and I was tempted to suggest that you lighten the whole shot to bring out more detail, but that would be counterproductive, given your stated intention. If it was mine I'd probably lighten that bottom corner to make it easier to see the building and bicycle, possibly continuing the increased brightness in the area of the road disappearing across the moor. Whether that would be better or not is hard to say.

I know nothing of what you speak and consider me lame for not researching before speaking Dave, in answer to your question....No. But wow what a great image lurks in there after a brief peak at it in Ps. You have presented as you wish and I have answered from my heart sir.

It seems to have uploaded rather dark Billy - it was a typical sunny day for the area, with the odd heavy-looking cloud obscuring the heat source. I've added darkness but it's come up overdone. I've never found the area depressing but then I rather enjoy the remote bleakness of certain parts and can understand it not having appeal for all.
The old schoolhouse is actually located just a few minutes walk from this tiny un-named tarn and the vintage Lea Francis bicycle is in my pals garage, just over the road from where I sit - but it could easily have been in the Lakes.
Many thanks for your honest opinion, always appreciated.

As I've said to Billy, it's uploaded too dark RG, I'll do something about that. See also my comment regarding situation of the component parts.
You've spotted all the essentials though, and that lonely road is an important part for me, so must be seen.
Thanks for your appraisal, it's much appreciated.

Your honest answer is all I seek Frank, and you know I appreciate it.
It is too dark for sure, but didn't look that way to me at the time of posting - I'll readdress that. The Lake District is a beautiful area and one I can highly recommend. We were unusually fortunate in getting a straight week of sunshine, but May is the areas dryest month and we do seem to be having a lack of rain generally.

Here is a slightly brighter version that is closer to what I was trying to achieve...

As Billy said, the Tourist board won't be banging on your door anytime soon for permission to use it. But as an image to capture the essence of the smaller more remote lakes I think you've done well. The top third of the image looks like you might get a bit more of it (I'm seeing grey where I might expect to see blue), but I've seen colours rendered every shade of grey by Lake District light.

Hi John, yep, it's come up grey and is determined to stay that way! I think the water is Little Langdale Tarn from looking at the Ordnance Survey map. It's just along from Slaters Bridge, if you know it. Not too remote, and on our way back to the Three Shires Inn for a well-earned pint. Thanks for commenting, it's appreciated.

I would have gone further, especially in the areas that I mentioned before.

It's again uploaded darker than I'm seeing on the computer RG. I take your point.

I like the shot. I like the second shot you posted even better than the first shot. My concern is the lower right corner. I think that little building and the bike leaning on the stone wall are charming; but they are tucked away in the far corner of the composition. It does give a feeling of what this area must be like. I think that is very important; and you succeeded in that respect very well.

I didn't have too much choice regarding position of the house as it was a very tight original shot with not much to work with. I did consider putting a separate wall element in, that would have allowed the house to move in more, but I didn't feel the end result really warranted the extra time required. Wrong decision. Spent a lot of time on the bicycle but that was something I really wanted in. For me, it turned-out better than expected and I should have gone for more wall.
Thanks for your comments Erich, much appreciated.

It is hard to make comments sometimes when we, the commenters, were not there. I think the end result was pretty close to what you had envisioned. I'm sure I'd be please with a shot like you ended up with.
